I am of the opinion that there are a couple of kinds of respect. There is the respect that we should just automatically show elders and people in authority such as teachers, bosses and law enforcement. (My mom was a single parent for much of my life so we spent a lot of time with my grandparents. Sass and back-talk were not an option. My boys were raised to treat their teachers with respect. I'd tell them, "You don't have to like them, but you will treat them respectfully.")

I think the other kind of respect is earned. One gets it by how they speak, act and treat others.
