Welcome to my pond - Swim, wade, or sit on the bank

Well, looks like we will put the bird down this evening. We have some other birds to process, so...I'm bummed, but that's the way it goes I suppose.
bummer.

take photos of the guts and post them for @casportpony maybe she will be abe to tell you what the issue was.

:hugs

We could be kin... Wouldn't that be wild? :lau
Her dad's people were Ledfords, her moms, Lewis. But I'm not sure of names beyond that.
'Fraid not; Mom's people were Wileys, at least all I ever knew about. She was pretty heavy into geneology, & I have all her stuff upstairs; I'll check when I get a chance.

eta: Schmidt was back in there somewhere, too. That's all I know w/o breaking out the records.

Hey all, just so I don't receive a bunch of stupidity elsewhere, I need to ask about my almost 2 year old BO. She's hunched in a nesting box, vent is puckering and unpuckering, whitish, light greenish, grey ish discharge on her feathers. I tried to get a pic (she's not a terribly "people person" hen) and this is the best one.
Her abdomen seems a bit swollen, but with a finger check, I couldn't feel anything inside. I've not had an egg bound hen before, so is that what this is? Epsom salt soak? Or???View attachment 1206886
@WVduckchick @casportpony @Ravynscroft @sourland and anybody else on this thread with advice would be very welcomed! :) you "click" you.

So sorry! :hugs Maybe Kathy will pop in.

Has she been dewormed? Has she laid regularly before? White poop (other than the normal white caps) is usually dehydration related. Otherwise, I'm at a loss...

By the way, tags don't work in Edits for some reason. :hmm

A hot bath cant hurt. I've had a few with those symptoms & it very often is a soft shell stuck up there. A hot bath, a little butt message & a lot of patience has usually worked for us. Once we had to use a little vegi oil (please don't let Chris see this post :fl) Just make sure that if you see the soft shell coming out, don't pull it hard it. I hold on to the end of it to encourage it in the right direction & as she tries to poop it comes out little by little. I've had some that looked near death until we got it out & are usually back to normal in a day or two. I'm no expert, but hope this helps.

PS. Mine ALWAYS need a bath on the days I'm busiest. Good luck!!! :hugs :fl

That's good to know - weird, but good to know.
So, she just got done molting - as far as I know she hasn't been laying for a long time. Her keel is protruding, but she's definitely still got mass. I will bathe her. She squirted out some hot water...
I haven't wormed them since July, so maybe that's an issue too.

Okay...Will try. She really looks terrible. But, she is pretty well past the age to have a Marek's infection, although I'm gathering there is no such thing. But part of me just wants to cull any sick bird - at all.
