Welcome to my pond - Swim, wade, or sit on the bank

A pack of coyotes could kill one, and probably a bear or mountain lion, but other than that they're pretty well too big for predators :)

You can't ride them, they're a bit too small for that. Ostriches you can though if you really want a bird to ride to work :p
but you have 2 right? What about a wagon? :wee

only problem I have had with dirt floors, is where the walls started... isn't where they stay....

So some areas the floor gets higher (so my pop door gets smaller), and other spots the floor gets lower, so you suddenly have a nice gap for a predator entry or chicken escapes.

But then I have the same issue with my run... started out with that fence sunk a nice foot below ground... I now have some areas where there are entry/exit points.
Hmm... have to think on that one.

Went to The Doc today

This one was a Geneticist. My Oncologist Surgeon recommended it. They interviewed me (the intern and Doc), about my family history and asked about cancers they had or if they had had cancer. Also their general health.

Then the Doc got down to why she was interested in my case. Apparently when they Looked closely at my cancer tumor they found that there were certain proteins that were missing. Then she spoke about Lynch Syndrome and that they wanted to analyze my unaffected tissue or blood for missing proteins.

If I am positive meaning they are missing. Next they will analyze My DNA. They want to know which side of my DNA is responsible... Moms side or Dads side. If its Dads side there is a 50 percent chance I passed it on to my son Dean.

Ok here is the skinny Lynch Syndrome is tagged for Cancer risk in other areas of the body. First most is Colon, Second Endometrium, Third is Stomach, Fourth is Ovary... There are six more but I don't fall in the population risk for them....

No matter the results they are going to order a colonoscopy of my colon and a endoscopy of my stomach. Looking for various things like polyps and cancer..... I made the comment about the tests "Wow at the same time? Do the scopes ever meet in the middle...." here comes my fear joking.... "Hey I see a light" The intern giggled.

If I am positive my son will have to be tested to see if he is positive as well and the recommendation is to do the same Colonoscopy and Endoscopy. Only not as often as I will which still doesn't make him a happy camper...

So my Journey continues.... All in all I am very happy I am in the hands of a research hospital.

Before her chicks hatched, she'd tolerate being stroked; wasn't crazy about it, but tolerated it. She'd start off growling, but stopped as I stroked & spoke. Since the hatch, she's having none of that, even though I've made no move toward the chicks. A leather glove is my friend. :hmm Maybe I just named her right...Grumpy
I usually go toward them "palm up" - they usually can't break the skin on the palm, but they sure can make a mess of the back of your hand.

3 days ago she seemed off, but she was still with the flock. Yesterday she went off alone & was sleeping standing up. She is all keel when you hold her. Her crop feels empty, but her butt feels heavy. There's no egg residue or sick poop stuck on her butt, tho I did se her poop a tiny, white sick poop last night. When I went to lock them up last night she was not in her normal spot in the rafters, she was wedged in the sand under the poop board. I put her in a nesting box but today she is back on the ground under the board again. Shes laying down, panting hard, with her eyes closed. She has electrolytes, but wont drink them & wont even eat the apple sauce today. I'll bring her in the house before it gets too hot out there today & try to get something in her, but we've lost enough girls to know when they hit this point, theres no bouncing back from it. :hitI'd try anything if I thought it would save her & I'm up for suggestions if you have any. Poor Frankie, she's just devastated.

We've had problems with CLs & Buff Orps. This is our second batch of CLs. The first batch we lost 2 out of 3. This second batch has been near feral, but seemed healthy..... Oh Chit …. Shes gone.
Oh no! I'm so sorry! I really hate that usually they won't even give you the "I'm sick" sign until it's too late. And, it's not like we walk around feeling their keels on a regular basis. ..

I know it's probably likely that the Martins attract more hawks and owls to the yard trying to get at them. .but that happens with all the other wild birds I have in my yard anyway. BUT they are so good at alerting to danger, and the ducks have learned to run for cover at their distress calls. It is truly something to see. Occasionally one of them will lose their little life defending their house. .but it's amazing to watch how they work together to chase the offender away. My favorite is when they dive bomb the squirrels off of the fence :gig

Hubby has the duck quack phone ringtone and played it last night. The legbars darted back into their pen and all the ducks froze in their tracks! It was hilarious. But they figured out it wasn’t bad after he did it about 5 times.

Oh dear, I’m so sorry :hit

Thanks you guys! Its been a long couple weeks & a sucky day. I spent more than an hour trying to dig a hole thru So Cal clay while crying big, fat, ugly tears for Baby Iris (who really is a lonely only now) & for DD Frankie. :hit The whole time I was out there I could tell (smell) my neighbor was watching me. I couldn't see him, but his cigarette smoke stayed very close. He was probably wondering why I was burying my dinner & trying to figure out why I was crying over it.

I've spent a lot of time today wondering if I should have put that damn egg under Poppy or if I should've just eaten it. On the con side; A lonely only city roo with no mother... What sort of life will he have? On the pro side; Poppy wanted to be a mother so bad & we were at least able to do that for her. Its been a great adventure, but I feel that more heartbreak awaits. Is there somehow a way to defy the odds & give this beautiful boy the life that every animal deserves? I know there are no answers & its no use questioning whats already been done. So, kay sera sera I suppose. :(

Rest in Peace Poppy & good luck Baby Iris. :hugs
