Very odd. Do yours' get oystershell on the side? Maybe the egg shells are too thin?
My Ameraucana bantams don't usually get many to hatch... I think that too many broodies jostle about too much or some such...
But usually, once the chicks hatch they are ok. They are NOT highly protective moms, but they keep the chicks warm, watered and fed.
Except for this year... they hatched out 3... ok... fine... but then they must have misplaced chicks or some such? Not kept them properly corralled?
I don't understand.
One morning 2 were dead... but just on the ground, nothing wrong with them.
Anyway... we moved 1 of the broodies with the remaining chick into the top only of the green tractor.
It is maybe 4x3, and in that small space she is doing fine.
Of course, we also have the 2 incubator chicks in there that are now maybe 6 weeks old.
The older chicks are fine with the baby, no issues.... but that does mean the toddlers have to be locked up in that same little area.
Anyway... so far so good.
I am thinking I will wait a few more days.. or if we ever see sun... and I will put a small kennel as a coop in the run area of the green tractor... so toddlers can be below and have fun in the grass, while broody and single stay locked up top.
In my big coop I have 2 that keep wanting to go broody.... I am worried that one girl is letting herself get too thin... but when I try to boot her off the nest, she runs right back....
Also... they have a bunch of broken shells too.
I think I really need to switch back to the 20% layer... I think they did better on that. Right now they are on a 16% all flock... and yes... oystershell on the side.
No idea.I have been putting out a cup of oystershell calcium out daily and it is gone the next day.
Ooooh!I’m drying off & heading for shore.I’ll splash back in when I can, but won’t be officially back till Sunday. Please don’t let Sour or Al pee on my lily pad while I’m gone.
Shes a big girl. Got spayed. Sorry, I guess I mixed threads.@sourland
