Good Morning, Pond!
Today’s the day! Broody Betty’s chicks are due to hatch! I couldn’t help myself, so I checked this morning before I left. She had three fluffy chicks under her already. Two black ones, and a yellow one. One egg zipped and another started. Just one left that I couldn’t see progress, but I had just graced at it, as I didn’t want to mess with it. I can’t wait to see what’s what when I get home.
Good Morning, Pond! Sunshine and wind today. The farmers would call it “a good drying day”.
I just realized that I never updated my chick report. Broody Betty hatched out 6 beautiful babies. I did help the last one. I typically don’t help with hatching, but the eggshell was crushed, like maybe Betty had stepped on it, and the membrane was all dried out. The fluff on the chick that was sticking out of the open spot in the membrane was also dry, so I gently peeled back enough membrane and shell for it to stretch out a little more and put it back under mama. When I checked a couple of hours later, it was out. As of yesterday, they were all running around and healthy looking.
