It seems a lot (name any area of animal husbandry that doesn't) of what you need to do to raise poultry is a DYI proposition. So, having a way to make quick sturdy cages is a must or so I'm thinking. So this weeked, we went out to the trade day here in Montgomery county Texas and several people had cages they made themselves from welded wire with 1/2 holes. They put them (the six panels ) together with these little crimps which had about a 1/4 inch in diameter, about 1/2 inch long and have a slit their entire length wide enough to get two pices of 14ga. wire into, then they are crimped shut. Its still loose on there once crimped shut, it doesn't close all the way down on the wire.... anyone know where to order these crimps and, the plier to crimp them with?? I figured it was an easy thing to procure but not so!

Also, any one know a place here in the Houston, Tx. area that sells 1/2 inch welded galvanized wire? (and maybe crimps and pliers??)

Just hoping...

I figure any of the larger feedstores carry what you need. It sounds like you are describing " J-clips". I get them at a feedstore here in a town with a population of 6,000, so I can almost bet Houston has them. Look for " J-clips, & J-clip pliers"

So once you've "clamped" your J clips, they "look" cylindrical?

And are you'all using 1/2" hole welded wire?? if so: what guage?

I can get almost anything here in Houston... and I'll add a question: if your using welded wire for your outdoor runs, what guage and hole size are you using? Most places only carry 4ft. wide with 2x4 inch holes. That seems ok for adult fowl but I will need 6ft. wide (tall) and in what guage?

Lastly, any thoughts for (or against) netting for the top of my runs? I was thinking of something thick like used at baseball batting cages.

Ok, I was confused by "how they start out" versus how they look once crimped; I thought they started out cylindrical but apparently not so.... It's J clips that I'm after and now can find them anywhere.

thanks! m
