We have a pitbull and a dachshund who are mongoose machines. They LOVE hunting them. The bully is gentle with the chickens, but the dachshund is not. So far we haven't lost any of the older girls. Have five teenagers in the coop that haven't been let out just yet. We also dug a 12 inch trench around the coop and installed the wire down into the trench to protect them from digging in. Mainly the stupid dog (dachshund) digs, no mongoose threat yet. We have tons of mongoose. Tons...I love Puna. We were just there yesterday actually![]()
Once I moved them into an enclosed run I didn't lose any more to the mongooses (I had wire completely across the bottom of the run). I set out traps for the mongooses when I was trying to free range my flock and trapped and killed a number of them, but still there were more. The numbers seemed endless, so I finally gave up free ranging them. One of da bruddahs who free ranges on Kauai says that they do not have mongooses there. Must be nice. And yes, they will eat anything. Next time try an Oreo on a hook attached to your fishing pole....that's how we eradicate!
