Those are plastic shower caddies the OP used to catch the blood from her birds in the killing cones/bleach bottles. Isn't that clever? In real life those caddies can be hung from the shower nozzle & hold your shampoos & stuff. But I thought that was a brilliant use for them by the OP!

Great job and good for you!!!! Doesn't it make you feel good knowing you raised something with love and care and then you are able to feed your family yourself!!! We are way ahead of the game.Sometimes I look at people at work and wonder who would be able to actually survive if they had to be self sufficient too.

I know this is an old thread, but I am really wondering what kind of roosters those were. They did dress out pretty good, nice sized. I am trying to decide which kind would be better, size wize, without getting the cornish crosses.
Thanks,
Carrie

I believe your mystery organ is a kidney. if you look at the previous photo of al teh other organs, there is a matching one=). Excellent job- your bird looks good enough to eat!

Nope. The fat-colored kidney-shaped organ is a testicle. In chickens, the kidneys are the liverish colored tissue n the deep pockets inside the lower back portion. They don't look at all like mammal kidneys. But kidneys in anything would be that same reddish-brown, like the liver and spleen. Never whitish/pinkish/yellowish.

I don't think I'll be doing any of this soon, but I ve read that wearing those gloves w/ the rubber on the palms and fingers makes it easier to pluck the feathers. I just don't think I can kill a chicken. I feel kinda faint.

thanks for the boost of confidence I dispatched my first roo yesterday.
Pithing was much easier, the feathers came out easy. Next time I am trying skinning though.
I gave up an hour and 10 minutes into it and skinned the bird. I got all the feathers out easily enough,
but the pin feathers were too time consuming.
This site provided great insight into just skinning
