Last I checked, Hawaii was still part of the USA.....

I meant, pineapples don't grow in Georgia but .... in Hawaii

Yes but what they're talking about when they spoke of the Dole *company* shutting down production in Hawaii is the very reason almost everything comes from other countries now! Clothing and all those things you're buying in "the dollar store" are being made by slave labor in other countries because the companies could *no longer afford to make them here* & they either went under or they out sourced to other countries because the *consumer* was BUYING the less expensive that was *made in foreign countries*. It's all supply and demand. If I'm selling T-shirts & paying employees that are part of a union & I have to spend X amount to manufacture them I'm not going to be able to sell them for the same amount one could buy them for at *the dollar store* & so I'm either going to go out of business or I'm going to out source....

The banks, insurance companies etc. aren't making *any fortune* but rather many are having to fold & that's why there's so many mergers!

Education? is there for everyone in the US you just have to work for it.... I know many who have and while they do now help their own kids no ones lived or slaved to pay for their kids college.

I'm not sure how you'd planned your retirement but my mom & mother-in-law both seem to be doing fine and have been doing fine for 10 yrs. now. None of them were "rich" I can assure you they just had retirement plans and some really good 401k's included in those plans!

Well Darling I am 64 and retired due to cancer, for me you are a Spring Chicken. See, I worked for 41 years at a European Government. Also I planned for retirement the first day I started working. Soc. Sec. Laws here in the US ..... well????? A change is nescessary in that point too. What I am getting from SSA for my work here is like nothing. The US SSA system stinks. It should be reformed and not put hard workers to pay for their life long contributions into 401K and then loosing everything in a crisis like this.

I wonder if towns will relax the rules about having farm animals if it comes down to it?

If I have to get a goat and more than 4 chickens, I will.

This is what I'd just asked and I could swear I'd heard some where that it's like a 6 month shelf life because it'll mold? I don't know if that's right & I can't remember where I'd heard/read it either. Maybe we can call one of the feed companies to find out?

I would think if kept dry, cool and rodent free it should last a lot longer then 6 months..grain is stored in bins for years at a time.

Well to be honest the Govt should let us all keep our 7.65% and manage it ourselves.I guarantee you i can provide for myself better than the GOVT can!! NO doubt!! Imagine keeping your fica and medicare and taking care of yourself and let the govt find creative ways to make money besided taking it from us at a 7.65 % level then paying us out at 62 at about a tenth of the level we contributed in over the years we worked. WHAT A FARSE!! EMPOWER THE PEOPLE NOT THE GOVERNMENT!!

LOL well Rastachicki I'd love to take all the credit and here in my home I will take the credit for giving advice but that advice to my kids when it comes to making finacial plans is to go to their father because he's the one who's the finacially creative one (talented even too like your mom) teach how to invest wisely, not loose your head & then panic during the tough stuff...... What *I* taught them is to listen to the successful and learn how they did it & then follow suit...... What you're trying to teach on buying stock now will not be heard because people are so afraid. Frankly I'm not sure I'd go buying just yet though you are correct there are some GREAT deals out there! But I'd give it a little bit of time too.

IMO the best investment now & in the near future will be real estate. People are going to be giving it away & so it's not the same kind of thing to "buy & flip" like they'd been doing in the past 5 yrs. or so but if you can hold onto it that will be a solid investment or *still there*.

OOOHHHH Honey ..... I really laughed reading this.

Are you sure you watched latest news?????

"Education? is there for everyone in the US you just have to work for it.... I know many who have and while they do now help their own kids no ones lived or slaved to pay for their kids college. "

Sure education is for everyone as long as you can afford it. Education shoud be free of charge until you reach University level. This will be a 'win win' situation for this country, having well educated people. I am a single mother and put two daughters through college ... there were many days, I didn't eat because I could not afford it.
My retirement is save and secure, because I established it with 41 working years in Europe.
