well kind of a medical issue...

I've got TMJ, you don't sound like you have it. It sounds like an infection. When you think of all the cavities in the face, you could have an infection anywhere there and feel pain like that. Ear infection, sinus infection, all kinds of fun things.

Antibiotics are probably in your future.

But that's a good thing. It means it will get better quickly.

thanks again guys,
and woww Eggs4Sale, that made me feel so much better.
Im still up (obviously) and I can't sleep cause Im still thinking about this crap. Can yall tell I don't go to the doctor much?

My daughter and I both have tmj, She has had surgery(key hole to put her jaw back in place) and a plate(she wears to bed) to correct hers because her jaw really hurt the surgery didn't really work put since she's had the plate ($700 later) her jaw is all better, mine doesn't hurt its just annoying when I chew hard things like minties and chocolate eclairs and sometimes it feels like its locked open.

Same her my jaw pops when i eat it can be embarrising

When I was younger and being seen by the orthodontist for the first time, he pointed out that I open my jaw incorrectly. It doesn't open straight down, more like a slack-jawed slide down and in at the same time. He told me to practice opening it the correct way. Naturally, I did not jump all over that advice. But I can see that the popping is eliminated or near so when I open the proper way.
Chewing food is a different matter, though.
My worst time is when I'm lying back (as in a dentist's chair) and have to open my mouth in that position. POP! Ow! My dentist thinks it pops like that all the time, so he's told me I'm going to have a miserable pain-filled life and I don't like going to him any more. I can't afford TMJ, even WITH dental insurance.

Stuckinthecity, rest easy. You're just a ball of infected mass.

Do you grind your teeth in your sleep?
AND have you tried a night guard?

Sometimes I would have swelling from the inflammation of the joint. I was diagnosed at 13, I'm 30 now. I have arthritis in the joint and am a human barometer. I have taken hydrocodone, vicadin and other drugs and they still couldn't knock out the pain.

The TMJ specialist put me on amytriptalyne, to try to get me to sleep deeper and stop grinding my teeth. He also gave me a mouth guard.

Once I started falling asllep behind the wheel I talked to the dr and he said he couldn't do anything else. He said surgery rarely works and that as a dr he does no harm.

So I had to find something else. I literally had asked a dr to just remove my jaw. So I read about magnesium. I find that with the magnesium I don't grind my teeth so I don't need the mouth guard.

This is true, I worked for one and went to him, need to go back to be honest, and a young girl came to him for treatment of her TMJ and it worked wonders. It sound like an infection to me, are you sure you don't have an absessed tooth and it just hasn't hit you really hard yet?

Hey, you can't just stop THERE! If we're going to hijack a thread, we're going to do it WELL.

1. What did you read about magnesium?

2. Does it get rid of your grinding?

3. Does it get rid of your joint pain?

4. Was the grinding causing the joint pain, or was the resulting bone loss causing the pain?

5. Whatever else you can think of...

I read a few things online and then started reading a book called The miracle of Magnesium. I was impressed and decided to try it. I literally would cry in pain everyday (and I have a high pain tolerance. I didn't use any pain meds after I had all 4 of my impacted wisdom teeth removed. Saved them and used them sparingly for my TMJ.)

I picked up a bottle of magnesium oxide from the store for around $3. I took 500mg twice a day. Within 2 weeks I felt so much better. So better that I will never be without magnesium again. I have been taking magnesium for about 3 years now. I have weaned myself down to 500mg a day and occasionally forget it. I start to feel a throb when I do and it reminds me to take it again. You can't overdose. If you take to much it just causes diarrhea. Then you know you need to back down a bit.

Magnesium is a natural muscle relaxer and relaxes the constant tension that causes the pain and grinding.

Most Americans are magnesium deficient. We don't eat enough magnesium rich veggies and the ones we do are grown on magnesium deficient soil. So they don't have as much magnesium as they should.

Many things deplete magnesium. Stress, prescription meds, and many other things deplete your magnesium. Calcium blocks absorption. So don't take it when you have taken something calcium rich like milk or OJ that has calcium added.

Serious it is the cheapest and best TMJ treatment I have found.

I have a serious muscle tension thing going on, always have. I've taken to drinking mass quantities of coffee to relax the muscles and shoo away the pain.
I had my husband taking magnesium and potassium to tolerate working in the heat better, but I never tried it myself. I don't handle vitamins well. But I'll try magnesium.
