When I was younger and being seen by the orthodontist for the first time, he pointed out that I open my jaw incorrectly. It doesn't open straight down, more like a slack-jawed slide down and in at the same time. He told me to practice opening it the correct way. Naturally, I did not jump all over that advice. But I can see that the popping is eliminated or near so when I open the proper way.
Chewing food is a different matter, though.
My worst time is when I'm lying back (as in a dentist's chair) and have to open my mouth in that position. POP! Ow! My dentist thinks it pops like that all the time, so he's told me I'm going to have a miserable pain-filled life and I don't like going to him any more. I can't afford TMJ, even WITH dental insurance.
Stuckinthecity, rest easy. You're just a ball of infected mass.
We're the ones who are complete losers..
Kezabel:
Do you grind your teeth in your sleep?
AND have you tried a night guard?
Yes I do Grind my teeth when I sleep(don't know how because I can't grind them when I'm awake) I wake up my hubby with the noise some nights
I've got three kids... I've caught myself grinding my teeth in the middle of the day.
A night guard may really help you. You won't be able to grind.
When I lived with my parents, my &$&^%^% sister would pound on my bedroom wall in the middle of the night and yell "SHUT THE HE## UP!" It was like living with Satan. No wonder I was grinding my teeth.
