Well... my "urban farm" got busted.. Meeting tonight!

The mayor who would not consider changing the ordinance needs to be reminded of things:

A good idea is still a good idea, even if he has not heard of it.
Popularity is not the sole measure of an ideas worth.
Just because he is not familiar with a concept does not make it wrong.
He is elected by the majority to serve the total population-not just the majority.
Since chickens are being kept with no noise or odor problems in opther cities, there is every reason to think that can happen in his city.

Have you considered circulating a petition? I'll bet you could get quite a few signatures and attestations from this website.

Once again I want to thank everyone for the support. Some good news on the front is that we found a small family farm, about 20 or so miles away that is more then happy to adopt our girls. We will be delivering the hens tomorrow. The owners informed me that we were welcome to come check things out, they have horses, chickens, goats, etc. I hope that by seeing the farm, my daughter will feel a little better..

Once again we appreciate all the kind words, and the encouragement. Yes a petition is in the works! Meanwhile, anyone who is interested can check out our newly formed blog: http://chickensinbarboursville.blogspot.com/ If you enjoy my rantings and want to follow along, feel free to join. Ill continue to post here as well.

Check out the federal "Righ to Farm Act"....you are allowed to have chickens...my cousin lives in a very "city" type neighborhood and won with this act!!!

Bless your heart! I hope they come to their senses and do the right thing that needs to be done in this day & age....Everyone needs to be more self-sufficient and chickens are a wonderful way to help be that way! After that last salmonella scare, alot of places have changed their ordinances to allow chickens...sometimes a limited number or hens without roosters....but, they are coming up against alot of people who are demanding the right to have chickens. As long as they are taken care of responsibly and the neighbors considered, there really is NO reason why chickens cannot be kept! GOOD LUCK!
-----------

Eleven chickens: Four buff orpingtons (my fav's: Miss Golden Chicken Nugget (Nugget), Peaches 'N Cream (Peachy), Goldilocks, & Sunshine, three barred rocks: Roxanne, Miss Chicken Noodle Soup (Noodles), and Rocko (my grandson named that one), two New Hampshire reds: Rosie and Scarlet, and two silver-laced Wyandottes: Miss Prissy (the top chick) & Bitsy. Also, one miniature Australian shepherd, Bella Luna and one sweet husband who converted our horse stalls & tack room into an awesome coup and run!

Define food! (I'm not being serious)

Sorry, but this would be an the argument that you would have with the city and the court.

I have a friend who is a lawyer and he said that 85% of the time they argue about the definition of words and phrases.

People have become to disassociated from the actual production of food. The desire for only cheap food and never realising what this means has led to wide scale abuse of animals. Yes they live so we can but does that excuse the contempt we show them because we can't be bothered to spend that little extra so the animals that sustain us can be treated with a litte compassion? By encouraging people to grow food in their garden, too keep a few chickens has so many benifits. 1 it reconnects people to the process of how our food is made. 2 with children it shows them where food comes from and is a training method to show them that just because they are an animal doesn't mean they can not feel pain and hurt.3 it will help farmers because people may start to realise how much we need them to feed us and stop treating them with contempt. In the UK the number of people we can feed from food from this country is about 6 million we have nearly 70. For a country to be like that is dangerous and ridiculous we need to think more logically about food and not just assume that its always going to be just a trip to the supermarket away.
