I'd ask my mom if I could go on the Pill, but she tried it (these awful cramps are genetic) when I was a baby and the side effects were worse than the cramps.

Have you tried aleve (naproxen-sodium?) it works REALLY well for big pains (considering I take it for my medical issues... yah, its a lifesaver!) and maybe it will keep the pain down.

Im so sorry!!
ETA Dont take the pill! Studies show a link between taking that stuff regularly and breast cancer (no, im not just saying this because i am anti-birth control, but because the side effects are worse than the disease!)

Just because your mom's side effects were bad doesn't mean yours will be.

The Pill has changed dramatically over the years, with different versions having different hormone combinations. Some even reduce your periods to four per year. If you get that sick, it might be well worth it. I've been on the Pill, and for most of my life used other birth control because I didn't like the way the Pill made me feel. This being said, for me as a teenager, the Pill would have changed my life and would have been far better than the periods I had. The other sweet thing about the Pill is that you don't have to worry about the whole "I've got something special planned, I bet Aunt Flo comes early" thing.

Tani: Can you get aleve OTC, or do you need a prescription? I'll look into the whole breast cancer thing.... But if I was taking it I don't think it would count as birth control, since I'm not sexually active.

Mom's folly: I don't think the cramps were what caused the throwing up, but they have and do make me cry. What side effects did it give you?

I can relate. Don't worry

Mine never gets in my way. Exersice eases cramps. But megan my best friend, her time of the month is so heavy she is anemic, and her cramps are so bad she stays doped up on musle relaxants every month.

Could you ask your doctor about it?

The Pill has not been definitively linked to breast cancer.

My side effects were a sense of lethargy, an off taste for food (which I still get when I have my period) and a lack of libido...the lack of libido was an issue for a young married woman, not so much for a celibate teen. But I've also been married 24 years, and that was early in my married life. The Pill has changed tremendously over the years.

As a young teen period symptoms for me included: wicked horrible cramps, vomiting, headache, light sensitivity, altered sense of taste, heightened sense of smell, lightheadedness, and floods. A sense of lethargy and a metallic taste in my mouth would have been a blessing, and the lack of libido wouldn't have been noticed. I also had irregular periods, and the Pill would have helped that.

You might need a prescription for aleve, but they sell generic naproxen sodium tablets or gels in target, walmart, etc. The usual dosing is one tab... I take three for my bad days like when my knees and hips pop out... so two or three should dull everything! And then, maybe a nighttime pain reliever for weekends, something just to knock you out for a few hours? Lastly, distract yourself. Move around, exercise (my friend Rachel has it like you, curled up on the ground screaming, fainting, etc... I'll ask if she has any ways of dealing!)

Oh that's awful. I can totally relate!

I get the same way. Some days I just can't move it hurts so bad. Several times I have thrown up, and I really think the cramps caused it. Back in January I got them really bad -- possibly the worst yet -- and the force of vomiting caused me to get my third hernia. A few years ago I fainted too. I was anemic for a while, but I took a bunch of blackstrap molasses because it's high in iron, and then my mom found a supplement kind of stuff called carao. It's from South America, and other than that, I don't remember much about it. I do remember people using it for horses though...

Ibuprofen works best for me. I take 2 before they get really bad and then every 6 hours or so 2 more. They work for me. If my stomach is empty I take the Tylenol though... My bad... i took the ibuprofen once on an empty stomach...
