Welsh Harlequin or Elizabeth Ducks

Hi.

You have the means to acquire Elizabeth ducks?
Wow...

You would do a very good thing if you bought Elizabeth ducks only, and breed them then : they are an endangered breed, so it would be great if you could help saving them!
I know, I really want them and to breed them because of that but because of the size of my property (and I rent) I am only allowed 2 ducks. So this makes it hard to breed them. However I will save the contact and once I get my own place I think I will try to breed them regularly to help out the population :)

A shame, really...!
Especially since you sound so eager to have ducks!

That's great that you are interested in helping the breed : Elizabeth ducks are so rare that even knowing about them is actually unusual...

In any case, whatever you choose to eventually do : good luck with your project!

► Just so you know, there is another breed - that is CRITICALLY endangered - that you might like too : Watervale ducks!

I don't know where you live, but since you know where to find Elizabeth ducks, I'm going to assume there is a 50% chance you could also find Watervale ducks...?

(Look at them : they are incredibly beautiful ducks!)

Yes it is! But I feel lucky to have learnt about them and this way when I do have a property that allows more than 2 ducks I can go back and start breeding them!

Oh interesting! Thanks for sharing that. I’ll give them a look into as well. Who knows, maybe in 12 months time I’ll be breeding both! Haha

You are welcome!

It would be amazing if you did!!
Just do remember to keep them separated by breed at least 3 weeks before incubating the eggs!

And if you do acquire Elizabeth and/or Watervale ducks, do post (a lot of) pictures, please...?
These ducks look incredible, but it is hard to find pictures of them...

(But of course, I hope you find ducks that bring you happiness - whatever the breed you choose eventually, even if it is not a rare one!)

Good luck with your project!

Hi Everyone,

I'm looking at getting 2-3 freshly hatched ducklings and trying to settle on a breed. I live in the suburbs so have neighbors but have a large enough yard for them to forage and then lock them up at night in a coop. I'm looking for a friendly and quiet (I know most ducks are somewhat noisy) breed. I understand that drakes will always be quieter but since I would like ducklings, they will be unsexed. I have heard a lot of good things about both Welsh Harlequins and Elizabeth Ducks. Both a bit hard to find but I think I have found a couple breeders. Not sure if I should get all 3 the same (maybe if one breed seems to be better suited for suburban/pet life than the other) or possibly a mix of the 2 (1 of one breed and 2 of the other). Does anyone have any experience with either of these two breeds or both? I have also been tempted with sweedish blue and cayuga. Although SB have been hard to find. Maybe 1 WH, 1 ED and 1 Cayuga? haha. Help Please!!! Thanks!
Wonder if you got your ducklings yet. I ordered Welsh Harlequin because i heard they talk but don't scream (unless a predator comes) like some other ducks. they are also more friendly if raised properly through handling young) CaI'm also in a residential area. I'm also in a residential area. I ordered mine from Metzer Hatchery in California. I just heard many good things about them. Not sure I heard of Elizabeth ducks or where to buy them........
