Welsumer Hens

Thanks Jamie and Ewesheep. I'm not equipped to hatch eggs and I really don't want strait run. Rehoming roosters is so hard and I get too attached to make soup. If you happen to know of a breeder in Vermont please let me know.

Are you all in agreement that Welsumers from the large hatcheries are of poor stock?

Sorry I dont know of any Welsummer breeders in VT.

Yep I agree hatchery bred Welsummers are not up to snuff nowadays. Some would get lucky to get terra cotta eggs and some dont. For those who had hatchery bred Welsummers some time ago, they may have been breeding them to get the dark eggs back into them and I would not be troubled about buying those.

Like my Spitzhaubens from Ideal, I had to cull the lot of them and got TWO reasonable good pullets with good crests and then from then on, I will find a Spitz roo probably from C Allen and McGraw lines. They are hard to find and we will take us a great deal of time and effort to get the "correctness" into them.

Good luck!

I am very happy with my Welsummers. I've found them to be a very docile bird and now that they have started laying beautiful dark speckled eggs, at 24 weeks, I am very happy with them. I ordered mine from EstesHatchery and was very pleased with the service (very old small family business). I ordered more than I would need, planning on some mortality, but every chick thrived. I like Welsummers so much that I have decided to dedicate one pen and coop just for them.

I just saw wellsummers and their eggs for the first time they are beautiful and I need some ! I visited Will Marrow at whitmore farm and he has a great flock on pasture.

Henry,
I checked out the website and it sounds like they have good birds there. I need to find out if they sex their chicks or if they sell them straight run. I really don't want roosters... I have one and need no more... I also would find some more people to split that order as I only want to add a couple of birds...

Again, if anybody knows of a breeder in VT please let me know

Thanks you all, this thread has been very helpful.

Yeah, I figured...
What do people do with all their extra roos? Are the chances for rehoming a Welsumer better than rehoming more common breeds?

I think most people sell them at auctions or process them I am going to sell mine at auction if I have extras from these marans.

I just picked up 5 wesummers pullets from the post office on Friday. I ordered them from Ideal. I ordered a total of 9 pullets, welsummers and cochins, just be prepared, you will get extras, males for warmth. I got 6 extras.
