Welsumer Hens

wellsummers can be sexed at hatch. The pullets have a very pronounced v on the top of their heads and goes all the way down the back. The roos dont have a v and if they do it is very blurry

Too bad Jamie.
I guess it is going to be hatchery stock... I startet another thread on that in the breeder/hatchery section.

Thank you all!

My Welsummers have just started laying and the eggs are beautiful. The size started as a small egg and each day they are increasing in size. Today I got one the bottom out the Jiffy egg scale. So that makes it larger than jumbo. I sure hope that continues. I will try to post some pictures tomorrow.

I will be posting the egg pictures very soon. www.esteshatchery.com They are located in Springfield, MO. Very nice people to deal with. If you want to incubate your own, I will have fertile eggs in the spring. Mine are just starting to lay and I want to hatch some myself to insure fertility and hatch rate before I sell any.

Here are the egg pictures as promised.

We purchased a few year old hens from a lady when we started out. One of them was a Welsummer. All the stock I have has come from Ideal - even the older ones I purchased. I can't say if her eggs were dark like specialty breeders, but darker than the marans and anything else we have. Wellie was my son's hen and he carried her all over the place. She was super friendly and loved to be with people. We lost her along with a couple more when a opposum got in the coop one night. I am on the waiting list with Ideal for the spring for more.

Nice eggs Opa!
I just send an e-mail to Estes asking if they sell sexed hatchlings...
Eventually I would love to hatch eggs, but am not equipped to do so at the moment.
