Dear backyard bird lovers,
I recently rescued a welsummer breed bird wandering right out the front of our vet clinic.
It is young, but i dont believe it to be yet fully mature. We are not avaian specialists & are housing the bird in the hopes its owner comes forward to claim it. However, to do so we need as much info as possible to post with its pictures on our website (sorry i dont have any available for this post).
My question is, how do i sex a bird once its past pullet stage but not yet fully grown.
It only has an avg size & colour comb & wattle, is in otherwise great health & every other aspect about it makes me think its a chicken, however, it does have talons that look just SLIGHLTY larger than id expect for a young female.
Can anyone help me with tips or the process of how to definitively sex this bird?
Any ideas, tips or tricks appreciated.
Thanks guys ;)

Will take some on monday & post them.
Any specific points of interest other than
Overall bird, comb & wattle & talons?

Well if its a wellsumer or a few other breeds with a welsummer type pattern you'd be in luck since the sexes feather out differently.
Here's a pic. You can see they have two different patterns.
Does yours happen to look like one of theses?

Kinda sounds like it was dumped... How are you sure it's a welsummer and not a mix? There are lots of birds with similar coloring. When you take pics please try to post clear full body shots from the side and front of the bird standing on its own. There are lots of really knowledgeable folk on hear that can confirm given good pics

If it has red ears its a Welsummer if it has white ears its a brown leghorn. If it is a welsummer just looking at the chest feathers as stated above should give you the info. Good luck and I hope you find them a good home.
