welsummer hen

I have one pullet at the moment, and I used to have a hen until the fox got her

She was no louder than any of the others (a Light Sussex and a Wyandotte), she never got ill, and she was my best layer. All round brilliant bird

We have quite a few welsummer hens and a couple of roosters. They are nice to have and not too noisy--the hens, that is. The roosters are another story. They do lay pretty eggs. Some of ours lay spotted eggs. Our egg customers love them. The eggs aren't as large as some of the other breeds and the hens don't lay as many as some, but they are tasty. Most of my welsummer hens do not go broody. I do have one who steals a nest every year and hatches a good sized clutch of eggs, 14 this year. She always makes her nest outside the chicken yard but cleverly near the dog kennel where she will not be bothered by predators. Sorry the one you chose was sold out from under you. You'll have another chance to get a welsummer hen and I would say she would be a nice addition to your flock.

We have a 17 week old welsummer pullet, Ophelia, and she's darling. Possibly the sweetest of our pullets. She kind of noisy; we recently integrated the hens with the pullets and Pheely makes the "something's wrong" noise when the hens try to come up onto the roost, but otherwise she's OK. our BR hen makes tons more noise.

Oh, and Pheely's PRETTY, too!

Are you KIDDING??? they need to come over and teach our BR hen Pheobe a LESSON- we kept track of egg production last month and she only laid exactly half the time. She just doesn't pull her own weight. (She eats it instead.)

Most of my Wellies are very friendly and lay an egg almost every day since Feb of this year. These are yearlings. One lays a light terra cotta color and the other one is dark terra cotta. The two girls are from two different bloodlines and I have more Wellie chicks, almost a month and half old and they are friendly but aloof. With food and treats, they will do well.

They are not good winter egg layers but they sure make up for the spring, summer and fall laying and taking a breakin the late fall to early spring. If you want combos that would layi n the winter, get some heavy breeds!
