Welsummer or Maran?

That is a great chart.

It does make a big difference when you raise them.

We got a bunch of EE's and had them all for about 6 weeks. Then, when they were ready to go outside, I gave a friend and her husband about half of them. Now, they are about 11 weeks or so. Anyway, with ours, we will give leftovers to our chicks. Ours LOVE fruit, cereal, and just about everything. Everything BUT WORMS. They are TERRIFIED of worms. My husband tried to put one in about a week ago. They ran up to it, saw it was the dreaded WORM, and all ran off to hide inside their coop screaming and flapping their wings. Then, they just peared out of the coop until the "monster" was gone. LOL:D

However, the ones that my friend has , from the order we split, theirs EATS worms and hates leftovers.

So, either we have done something different, or my leftovers and their worms taste better.

I have Marans and Welsumers. I like both breeds temperaments. Both breeds are friendly, easy going.
The Welsumer's egg color is added after the egg is formed so it is on the surface and can scratch off, it is also a dull/matt finish. Where as the Maran egg surface is shiny and the color is in the egg shell.

My Welsummers are not laying, but I'll tell you what the breeder told me (he breeds both Wellies and BCMs) when I asked him about aggressiveness. Simply put, he said "I've eaten more Marans roosters than Welsummers." His preference was definitely for the Welsummers although there wasn't a marked difference in their laying according to him.

Does Whitemore have good Welsummers?

I'm too much of a newbie to know if they are any good, but his website impressed me so I'm buying from him.

I've never heard anything negative about Whitmore Farms. They seem to be held in pretty high regard. I've pretty much decided that my next chicken foray will be hatching eggs from Whitmore Farms.

My Welsummers lay much less often than my Marans..... My Welsummers slide off their egg color faster than the Marans. Temperament for both of them is good, but we are around them constantly.

Actually as I'm getting overcrowded here with all of this years new projects - lav orps, delawares, light sussex,Wheatans, a few projects here and there. etc......I'm thinkingsomethings got to give. I have a wonderful flock of welsummers but I may be selling them.....I'm struggling with the decision.....I really don't want to let them go, but may be listing them after a while.... I saw mention of the Barnvelder and when I looked at a color chart for their eggs, it's so light that I've got RIR's that lay darker....And yes I know there's a lot of work to be done with the breed.

Hope this was helpful and have a blessed day. Nancy

Actually both Marans and Welsummers deposit the egg color after the egg is formed. Both breeds have a paint booth (so to speak) in there and color is sprayed on..on the way out. The longer the egg stays in the chute the more color sprayed on...the darker the egg. Both Welsummer and Marans egg color can be washed off.

I have had both breeds. the welsummers lay great all through out the winter, the marans did some what (young bird) but the marans for me, had larger eggs then the wellie. personality wise, they were about the same, both slightly skiddish but not a bad thing when free ranging.
