Welsummer Question

Like you, I am still learning about Welsummers and starting up the Club is not easy to get it off the ground when you have PT and family commitments going on at the same time.

Believe me, it would be worth the wait!

EweSheep, I just checked out your website. I noticed you referenced some of your stock came from CalicoFarms. The individual I bought my eggs from said her stock came from stock from this breeder as well. I guess that is a good thing.

I agree with Ewesheep, there should be no brown in the breast area. My rooster has a solid black breast and he won best in show or champion (not familiar with terms because I don't show) in the chicken show in 2007. His breeder was the County 4H coordinator.

Also I have heard that some strain of Welsummers are coming up with feathers on their legs. This is also unacceptable for show birds and for breeding stock. If you just want them for pets, then its fine.

I have 15 babies right now that I am raising and hopefully I will have 1 great Roo and Hen to take to the show next year.

I wanted to say too, that laying a little bit later isn't really that bad of an attribute. They may take later to lay but their gorgeous dark terra cota eggs are well worth it. Mine hens don't lay every day and while it is frustrating, it makes for an even deeper and richer shade and alot of speckling. I love my Wellies!

May I suggest another breeder to add to your flock, something new? Tailfeathers has some awesome ones and I am looking forward in getting some in the fall if they do continue to lay.

There are a few BYCers here that I can not remember right off hand but Aussie Sharon is one of them. Not sure of SpeckledHen if she does have a roo to go with her girls.

I agree with Ewesheep, there should be no brown in the breast area.

There is supposed to be red mottling in the male's breast.​

Next year I will probably look into getting some from another breeder. I have added many new breeds this year (Welsummers, Buckeyes, Barnevelders, Light Brahmas, Speckled Sussex, Dark Cornish, and Dominiques). I went from getting my first eight 17 week old production RIR last Fall, to all these this Spring/Summer. I need to get all these taken care of and under control, then start deciding how I want to expand and improve each breed from there.
