I have an 8 wk old Welsummer that is developing foot feathers. Is this something that pops up in the breed occasionally, or is my boy "special"?
Thanks!

Thanks for the info, Chickndaddy! Do you have a lot of Welsummers? The roos seem really laid back (only 8wks though!) Has this been your experience?
Thanks!

so far none of my birds have had feathers on their legs. haven't heard from any one that has got eggs from me that thiers chicks had feathers either.

None of my Welsummers have leg feathers either. As far as the roosters, I've had several and they have always been perfect gentlemen. Never had an aggressive one yet. They are beautiful too.

Here's the scoop on this: I consulted a breeder who told me it's fairly common for Welsummers to have some feather stubs on their legs and fuzz between their toes due to their ancestry. You'd want to pluck those if you show them. I hatched some like that, but they never developed actual feathered legs.

Thank you Cyn. I was at a loss for the word.

I had about 30-40 hens in the breed pen with three roos. And I kept a few extra roosters and pullets on "the yard' or kitchen flock for back up. My roosters were great guys. Never had any aggression with them towards me and they were great to their girls.

Never had any featherings on my Wellies!

Welsummers are so personable and so friendly...its fast favorite of mine! I dont have any roos in my flock but this clutch of chicks I will retain one roo for the winter and early spring before he heads out to a friends farm.

Have fun!
