Went to a poultry show for the first time

It was the southern ohio poultry ass'ns spring show.

I had entered my chickens but wasn't able to get there that morning to enter them

However we went later in the day and it was amazing and fun

I now know that there is a big difference between hatchery vs. breeder chickens. The RIR, Brahmas, and Langshans were HUGE!!!!
I have never seen a chicken that big before. A friend of the family always bought Orps and rirs from a hatchery and they are like half the size of the show birds.

I saw showgirls in person for the first time and I want them even more now lol.

I found an awesome breed that I'd never seen before, I am pretty sure it is the Shamo (some of the pics online don't look as awesome as the ones at the show) They are so neat they look like dinosaurs, they have huge think legs. They must be close in genetics to some of the prehistoric birds. My mom hated them but I want some so I'd have to get eggs and nit tell her what they really are lol.

I have also fell inlove with sumatras. The ones there had black combs and waddles, unlike some I've seen in pics. I like the solid black ones better.

I took my cameras but for some reason I didn't take any pics lol DUH.

The sad thing was finding out our chickens would've gotten 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. There wasn't any Mille Fluer pullets in the Junior section and 1 cockeral, and my sister was supposed to be entering a cockeral and pullet. Our Sebright would've lost maybe even DQ'd it is twice the size of the ones there. Our Red Pyle OEGB cockeral would've gotten 1st or 2nd cause there was only 1 other one, and I can't remember how many pullets there were.

So we definately should've got up and got them there. But it was a blast and I am looking for the next one close enough to go to.

eestep8, I know what you mean about the size..they looked unreal didn't they? I went to the same poultry show. This was my second time. My brother met me over there. It was his first time. He was amazed and surprised at all of the variety's and also the size of some of the chickens. I have bought almost all of mine from the hatchery and now I wish I hadn't. I would love to bring a set of each breed home wouldn't you? What did you think of the water fowl!? I wanted to bring all of them home. My brothers favorite was the white call ducks, my husband couldn't believe the penciled ducks. Did you see those? They are very unusual. I enjoyed every minute of it. Don't forget about the fall show. I showed a white wyondotte rooster. He got a 1, but didn't place. I couldn't get him white enough after being outside. I can't stand the thought of keeping him caged to keep him white. His sister got reserve american breed, showed by Joe Fitch. I was excited for him. I am glad you enjoyed your first show. DJ

The bigger they are, the easier they are to catch. LOL Your right, the Exhibition breeder lines have much more thought then hatchery. Hatchery breeders want their birds to lay alot of eggs. Everyone wants eggs, but they take little time in maintaining a standard. And to each their own. I agree with what you like. For the same reason. I just started my Buff/Black/Blue Orpington flocks. But, I started with quality. It would take me 5 years with hatchery stock to get where I am IF I didn't buy from exhibition breeders. My Black Orpingtons lay 2 out of 3 days. And have 100% fertility, plus they are close to a standard. And all they have to please is me. I am not easy to please.

It will be held at the Logan County Fairgrounds, in Bellefontaine, OH, off Ohio State Route 68. Judges for Open are Clell Agler & Lew Cunningham; Youth Judge is Ed Mongold; and Showmanship will be judged by Tylor Murray.
