(the underside. note, none of the wattles are red at all. it's just the reflection from the tablecloth)

They were four days old when I bought them (this chick and a black sexlink) on easter. They're about 2.5 weeks old now. my sexlink has a bigger crown and is developing wattles more than this gal! Though I read that barred rocks that are lighter are males? This was the only chick like that there on easter. All the other barred rocks looked smaller and looked like barred rocks! I got this one hoping it was an australorp (they had those the week before), but now the feathers are striped?? But the ones at the end are pure white!!

What is this chick??
And what gender is it?

yes! This one is sooo sweet and very fluffy compared to my sexlink.

:3 I have them snuggled in my pocket right now.

Okay so did a little bit more research and it looks like this is /probably/ a barred rock boy.

oh boy.. we have... 6 roosters?

:| I am bad at picking hens.

This one's got REALLY pretty barring though. Came from mcmurray hatchery.

This is a pic of my 4 week old barred rock pretty sure its a pullet. I did alot of research on them. Pullets will have more of the white dot look on feathers and Roos will have more of a white bar. If yours is a barred rock and im no expert, it will be a roo.

I just cant think of what else it /could/ be. it doesnt look like a crele or a dominique.

Some kind of mix-up somewhere maybe, but it sure is a unique little bugger! Did you buy them somewhere that their were neighboring bins? All too often people do pick them up and do forget which bin they got them from. It's also among the reasons it is advised not to pick them up. Is this the case? If so, can you find out who the 'neighbors' were? Whatever it is, I think I'd be pretty happy with it. You'll probably have to play the old 'wait and see' game. Frustrating, but...

:p the place just had one bin with all the chicks in it.
They had barred rock, rhode island red, red sexlink, and black sexlink.
The week before they had black australorpe but this little bugger was definitely young when I got them.

They /always/ have those breeds. sometimes leghorns. But it's just those 6 breeds. This one looks like none of the above!

I guess it /could/ have been a mix-up at mcmurray hatchery.

I think probably a black Australorp. Our hen looked very similar as a chick, I remember being surprised by the white feathers on the juvenile. We have a barred rock as well, if I remember correctly, the australrop had some solid white juvenile feathers, on the barred rock each individual feather as they came in had the "bars" or stripes. No clue as to gender.
