I also went to the feedstore today and was able to hold back. I only brought 1 Ameraucana/ EE? I'm holding out for specific breeds this year.

I do, tho, already have 2 other chickies in the basement with mama, making a total of 3. 1 is "special" and may not make it tho.

BTW...its a wonderul thing to be able to pick up an orphan chickie and give it a wondeful, warm, protective Silkie for its Mama.....

She absolutely loves them all. Not the same breed either. I've heard silkies will raise just about anything. There's one I was just reading about in New Zealand that is raising 4 baby rabbits.

She hatched out one, and I just keep adding to her brood and she just keeps getting happier it seems. Still pretty viciously protective too.

Great! I too am holding out for 4 different breeds, so I have to go to the feed store 3 times, hehe. I'm set on my 4 chicken maximum due to the coop we're building, so I have to hold fast. I sure hope I have your willpower! Congrats. Great thought about the silkie. I don't have one but some day I may for that reason.

Yes. It was hard, but I have to hold out if I want to stay under my allotted quota. I have 10, and can have as many as I want in my area, but the dh is holding me in check. I can really only add about 6 more and want a blue andalusian and some fleur d'uccles, so I need to wait another month.

She did look confused on who the daddy was.

Hmm, Can you add a day-old to a month-old in the same brooder? I was told I couldn't, and 2 weeks age difference was about the most I should do. So I changed the breeds I want to all arrive at my feed store within a week. The head difference in the brooder would be 15 degrees... Just curious.

You certainly do NOT want to add day old chicks to a month old chicks under the momma. She probably would reject them. All you can do is to take the month olds away from her, and slip her the day old chicks if she is very very motherly toward any aged chicks. If you take those two different age groups of chicks, there will be some problems with pecking order and the day olds will not be able to defend themselves easily from the OLDER chicks.

Most mothers woudl have rejected the day old chicks and just keep the brood they have cared for that long.

Yes, I was not planning on adding the newbies to the older chicks. I have the space for both age groups. I have not yet decided if I will take her older babies away and give her the new ones yet.

She really does lover her babies, tho. I think she just wants to be a Mama.

I could also try with my other silkie, but she is not as dedicated.
