We're 7 week old EE's and we think we're girls...

They look like girls to me, I have a boy EE who is the same age and has a very pronounced and red comb compared to the girls who's combs are starting to turn pink.

I think they are very very pretty by the way.

Thanks everyone for your input!

The reason I felt they may all be females is that they all have a single row in their pea comb...I know it's hard to tell in the photos, but it's really hard to get chickens to stand still for a second

and they all feathered out much earlier than the males in this group. Their brothers had three row pea combs and started getting red in their combs at 4 weeks old. One even started to crow early. These three all have more female like behavior too. But if any of the three is a male, behavior-wise, it would be #1. (S)he's high on the pecking order list and is always dive-bombing the others by landing on them with both feet. (S)he breaks up squabbles and is just generally more bossy. But (s)he also ducks down and gets very quiet if some bird flies over the chicken tractor and makes a swooping shadow when they are all in it rather than standing up and chirping like a roo would... ducking down is supposed to be female behavior. And I've also read on here that sometimes when there's no male in a group of chickens, that a female will take over that role. I can't have any roos, no matter what, so I'm praying (s)he's just the alpha female!

I have two 2-week old EE chicks that are showing definite signs of being a male and a female already! One has a 1-row pea comb and longer tail feathers and the other has a 3-row pea comb and barely any tail feathers at all. Everything is in Size Tiny still tho..

I appreciate your comments and will be watching them much closer now for signs of roo-ness!! This is all so frustrating!

One minute you think you know and the next you don't.

Anyone have any idea what color these chicks are?

P.S. Texas Star, is that your pic with the Mehendi? It's beautiful!!

Pic one looks like a bubble gum comb (halfway between single and pea). If it is, then it's probably a pullet. Also, that color pattern, with the quail-ish markings looks like a female to me... But EEs are not my forte...

Thanks for your opinions Sunny Chook Farm, coopist and Hobby Chickener.

Coopist, I learn something new everyday. I've never heard of a bubblegum comb before. Thanks!

I'm definitely going to keep an eye on Abbie (Abner) for signs of rooishness! (Is that a word??

I'm keeping track of how many votes for male or female they each get...So far Abbie has 4 votes for male and 4 votes for female...Emma has 8 votes for female ...Maggie has 1 vote for male, 6 votes for female and 1 ?. It's not looking too good for Abbie!

Just how old does a chick have to be before you know for sure? Do they either have to crow

or lay an egg

before you know?

I would say that #1 is a boy based on the feathers looking pointy.

Plus the tail looks like a rooster to me whereas the other 2 have more rounded tails and rounded feathers.

Looks like the last one had some tail feathers plucked out.

I don't know what color they are but #2 is beautiful!

Let us know what #1 turns out to be.

Wow- I just noticed how late I am in this discussion!

Emma is GORGEOUS...... She looks like the beautiful big sister to our EE chick Fatima. Where did you get them (Ours were from Meyer via MPC, and another chick in the batch, who went to another home, has the exact same coloring as Emma and Fatima...)

Thanks for the late input on these chicks, you guys!

I got the EE's as straight run chicks at Schlecht's Hatchery in Miles, Iowa. We drove to pick them up...it's about an hour from us.

I'm still waiting to find out what these guys are. They are just over 10 wks old now.

Here is Emma today

This is Abbie today

And this is Maggie today

I just love these chicks and would hate it if any of them are roos. I can not have any roos! My neighbors could turn me in now and I'd have to get rid of them.

It's sad how attached you can get to a chicken!!
