We're overdrawn :(

I fully understand your complaint, I'd be annoyed too. The other poster's complaint about always getting screwed by the bank when writing checks holds no water if you don't keep track or are trying to game the system to begin with.

I ditched BoA for our hometown bank long ago.

For most of the banks I have dealt with, it doesn't matter what order they post the day's deposits or debits as long as you aren't in the red at the end of the day.

It is NOT that you do not keep track. Heck, if I had the money there able to cover whatever check i write, I would not care. Most people do not have big money in the banks checking system. Overdraft fees, Overdraft protection STILL will get you in the end. It is 20 bucks for an overdraft protection fee, 35 bucks for an overdraft.

Most checking accounts do not give you an interest rate, by design unless you have a BUNCH of BUCKS. Have you ever written a check and someone waits WEEKS to cash it ? Oh, sure you mentally keep that money in there, but sometimes it does slip the brain.

OH, I understand that you should be responsible and reasonable and carefully register your checks and deposites.

Taking precautions is worth a thousand entrees in your register.

I'm only taking cash from you from now on.

Umm no one likes to hear this stuff but a Cushion in a bank account usually stops all overdrafts. If you have say $500 in there you have to write that much before anything is over at all. If you don't have $500 to put in Leave $100 in there or even $50 a month for the next 10 months and you will never have a problem like this again. You probably spent less than $100 to incur the charges. If you had the cushion then .........no biggie you can just go in to work and get on to the person that handles the payroll.

Cushions in the account are nice and almost a necessity unless you never make an error in your register. Due to how easy it is to miss add or forget to add in a reciept a cushion can save alot of worry and heartache that''s for sure. But cushions are not always possible. I don't think people get upset at hearing that they just may not be able to have a buffer at that time.

I agree with the plan about the cushion for the future. Our cushion is just our savings account; our checking account and savings account are connected to prevent an overdraft from happening.

Of course, hindsight is 20/20 and it won't fix the present. I wish you the best of luck in fixing things up with the bank.

That has happened to me several times. I learned to anticipate my direct deposit being late, just like my child support. Everytime there is even a minor holiday, or it's the first of the month (for the CS) everything ends up going in late.

Sometimes I think (with the child support anyway) it's a way for the state to hold onto your money for a bit longer and earn interest. I have fees taken out by 2 states, and then they delay sending the money. Grrrrrrrr.

I try to keep at least $30 in the bank for random fees and xbox live and such. They come out a different day every month, so I don't even write them down anymore.
But- sometimes you just don't have it!

just wanted to share how we "created" a cushion relatively painlessly. we pretty much live pay check to pay check like many people but what I do now is every time I record a deposit I round down (ie deposit amt 123.53 would be recorded as 123.50) and everytime I record a deduction I round up (ie walmart 123.53 would be recorded as 123.55) also if I get extra money sometimes (overpmt on credit card or something) and the mail me a check say for $1.39 or whatever I deposit that and don't record it to add to my cushion.

I track my account online to make sure I don't miss anything but by not writing in the amount rounded up or down in my check book I have managed to create a cushion of about $50 dollars in about 6 months time. It's not much but it is helpful
