My 11 month old Blue Orp Roo started gurgling yesterday and holding his tail down, standing in corner. No nasal discharge or anything like that. Holding his mouth open to breathe. I read for hrs. yesterday and it sounds like gapeworm to me. I didn't have anything to give him last nite but separated him from other birds. this morn I went early to Jeffers and got Ivomec. I have never wormed my chickens with anything but Cayene pepper and they need it now. I gave him .3cc of Ivomec orally. He weighs only around 8 pd right now . Feels like he has lost weight. If this is the problem how long can I expect it to take to help him. I would appreciate any help as if I need to go back to Jeffers before 7 pm I will. I added electrolytes and Vits to water.

You didn't say, but did you check his throat? I'm pretty new at this stuff, so please forgive me, but I did have a RI red that LOVED pink styrofoam. She once managed to break off a pretty large piece that got stuck in her throat. She just stood still with her mouth panting. No noise, just standing looking droopy. Fortunately, we saw a tiny bit of pink in the back of her throat and I was able to pull it out with tweezers.

I didn't see anythingwhen I put meds down the throat.. May have more than one thing going on. I gave him tetracycline this afternoon. He is not eating but is drinking. He doesn't seem worse just not better. I have a few other juvie chicks around 3 months showing signs of fow pox. So I am dosing everyone. I am not used to having chickens with problems. Hopefully things will be looking up tomorrow.

Don't know but the good news is all my chickens seem better. I am now thinking no fowlpox at all. All of this started after my Dh put Sevins dust in the coop. I think they just had a reation to it. They are eating like pigs and seem fine today. My Roo is some better. I think he is going to make it. I gave him another dose of Terramycin this am. He is eating a little.

I'm so glad your chickens are doing better!

And I appreciate you posting this.. sometimes it's easy to forget that it could be something like a reaction, instead of something more serious.

my personal preference is not to use dusts and (especially around chicks) ... the dust is not only a danger to their respiratory system but if they eat it (perhaps a clump settled on something he ate?) ... dust is just more difficult to contain to specific areas .
(If you specifically need advice from WES you can always email him direct...he is so very helpful I am sure he will always answer)
