Last year, a group of scientests captured 100 mosquitos to study them for diseases. Four of the mosquitos had West Nile Virus. This year, the same group of scientest captured 100 more mosquitos to study. This time, 84 of the mosquitos had West Nile Virus.
West Nile Virus is a deadly disease that most mosquitos carry. If a mosquito with the virus bites you, you will get the disease. Since study says that mosquitos are attracted to birds, your chickens are at high risk of getting the disease.
Some side effects of this disease in your chickens are: Pale, almost white face, comb, and earlobes, Moveless behavior, not eating or drinking, panting, droopy tail, cuddled up,
are all side effect of the brutal disease.
Ways to discourage mosquitos from coming to your yard:
1) Make sure to drain all setting water wich can support mosquito breeding.
2) Dump out waterers and add fresh water to them daily.
3) Try to keep your chicken inside the coop at dusk and dawn because thats the time when the mosquitos are most active.
4) Wear a strong repellant the has DEET (a brand of diethyltoluamide) in it.
5) Remove over-soiled litter and replace it with fresh litter .
Natural Repellent Reciepe
Materials:
Small Empty Spray Bottle [one you can get a the 99 cents store]
Tea Tree Oil [wich you can find at a health food store]
1-1/2 cups of water
Add the water to the spray bottle and add 15 drops of the Tea Tree Oil into the spray bottle. Then, you have a non-toxic repellent wich you can spray on your animals.
I spray this repellent on my chickens every day so that they will be invinsible to the mosquitos. I also spray it in the coop, nesting boxes, and roosts. Cleaning the coop completely also discorages mosquitos.
The West Nile Virus isn't a big problem in the north, but in the south, it is getting worse every day. Any time you see mosquitos, be aware that they may carry this deadly disease.
If anyone would like to share a way we can stop mosquitos from coming to our yard please do so.
