- I put them in the brooder with the bigger chicks and I think she got stomped, it was temporary because I had to do up a new brooder because they were so small, but didn't make it up soon enough I guess.

This one was the lighter girl:

opening bid was $15.00 and it went up to almost 55.00 $ before auction end.
I nearly fainted, some of those auctions on ebay can get insane.
Me thinks I will wait for your chicks to hatch LOL. local buying is always the best.

Perfect brooder, simple and easy to make.
56 qt plastic tub with lid.
remove the solid part of the lid leaving 2 or more inches to the side. cut screen, hardware cloth to fit opening, drill or poke holes around the measurements for the screen zip tie down in place put lamp on top and your good to go

what size bulb gypsy?

Right now I am using a normal 60 wt bulb, but you can use higher or lower wattage bulb.
right now for quail and baby duck its 60 wt gives you 100 degrees under the bulb and 85 degrees to the sides away from the bulb.
total cost of the heat box is 6.00 to 8.00 depending where you get the tub and if you already have heat lamps and bulbs.

Edit IF and I mean IF your going to transport the babies in your vehicle on a heated seat remember to get solid colored tubs NOT clear enough to see into, that could be your next DUI under the cuteness rule

all depends on what works best for you. I find on top is a bit safer using plastic but the beauty of plastic is it holds the heat better than the wooden ones.
