Westminster Deerhound Wins Best in Show!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Last year we were at TS picking up some supplies and a man came in with this huge black and white dog on a lead. My hubby looked at me and said: "Newfie?" I said I'd never seen one that color, but it sure did look like a Newfie. So I asked, and sure enough, that's what he was. Really nice looking dog!

WHAT!!?? I missed the Westminster this year!! Gahhhh! I missed seeing my Clumber Spaniel...

Deerhounds inspire extremely fierce loyalty. It is very hard to explain to the 'outside world', the 'non deerhound world'.

There just is no dog like a deerhound in the world.

They are absolute murder to take care of and require a very, very deep committment of time, care and knowledge. They are definitely not appropriate for 99% of dog owners.

No. Wolfhounds are massive, very heavy, great bone. They are built to pull down wolves.

Deerhounds are built like a greyhound, just slightly more bone in the leg and very slightly more substance. The coat is similar to a wolfhound's - very ratty and untidy looking, hard as wire, but when you put your hands on the dog and feel under that coat, you realize, it's very greyhoundy.

It does NOT run like a greyhound, which stoops to run. Deerhounds carry their head slightly higher than a greyhound.

I agree on the GSD, the hocks were to long. If Jimmy M. were there he would not have shown that dog. I'm glad the deerhound won!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Would I want one? No, I don't know enough but the breeders ARE dedicated and want the BEST for their dogs so that is understandable if they appeared to be snooty but they would "analyze you" first to see if you ARE serious about the breed.

I'd rather have a greyhound or Borzoi or Irish wolfhounds. All of them are better to care for but they do require time, care and knowledge like any other dogs.

I've had GSD and the more I've seen those outlandish moves or too long in the hocks or cowhocked, good God, what have they done to the breed!!!!!!!!!!! I'd rather have a WORKING breed than a breed that looked like it's so badly mangled. Shame on the judges not seeing that fault by letting that GSD place that high up in the class.

For people who have wanted a Deerhoud and can't find one in the US, it can be easier to import a puppy from Europe. Thats the rout a dog friend of mine had to go with a couple of her breeds. Some of these lesser known breeds are so hard to come by here, finding a good breeder and importing can be much easier!
