Westminster Deerhound Wins Best in Show!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I very, very seriously doubt they will 'rocket to number one' or even close to it. There are about two dozen deerhound puppies registered per year. And you'd have to know some of the breeders - they are a very, very close knit, determined group and they take what they do, very, very seriously.

Yay for Angie and Hickory! Hickory is a beautiful dog and Angie is a great handler. I've watched her in the dachshund ring since she was a junior.

Yeah, seriously I was thinking the exact same thing. I looked at that specimen and it was just *weird dysfunctional* looking <walks away shaking head>, I'd take Redyre's over that ANY day.

I had never seen a Newfie with so much white before, that was pretty cool, they are quite attractive that way! Want. Well no, not really, too absorbent for a wet property like ours, but, you know.

Pat, did not stay up for best in show but always an admirer of tall critters like deerhounds, except for the lifespan thing.

I haven't see the show, wished I did!

As for Newfies, my aunt and uncle had shown them (BearTraxx) and they did say too much white in Newfies are distracting to most judges and not really that color acceptable to have white Newfies or with too much white. It would look too much like a St Bernard in bicolor.

I love deerhounds too, and the Irish wolfhounds and my favs, the Borzois. Not they eat a whole lot more but you have to take care in how much you feed them and not to let them run after a good meal because of high incidents with bloat. Never had a dog that had bloat because my parents instill that in me, they had collies. Yeah I know what you mean about lifespan, too short!

Love, love, love the deerhounds and wolfhounds. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately??? LOL), hubby does not! That bearded collie was awesome, also. And Leonbergers! I have friends who have two of those, and hubby works with a guy who has one. Sweet giants, but giants they sure are! Gorgeous.

Many years ago, I was given an older Wolfhound puppy, he and a sister were being given away due to a genetic issue they both had. The cilia in their bodies didn't work.
They were given a broad spectrum antibiotic, that they would have to stay on for the rest of their lives. He had what the breeder called a case of walking pneumonia.
He lived 5 months after we got him. It was heartbreaking to have him have a heart attack in my arms in my kitchen.
His sister had died even younger as they had sent her to live in AZ, the dryness of the desert was too much for her.
When they bred his mother, they sent her 2 states away, she still had half the sire's bloodlines. The wolf hound family tree is a twig. So many were lost in the wars
that they are very very inbred.
I am soo happy the Deer hound won!! I love the breeds, and miss my wolfie so much!
I saw one last year in some competitions, and it may have been the same that won this year, it was a strong contender last year.
If a stag/deer/wolf hound lives to be 9-11 years old, its considered ancient.
Such wonderful animals!!!

Maybe in theory but this one sure didn't, my husband (a canadian and long-time admirer of Newfies) and I saw it lining up to come into the ring and went "what is that? it looks like a Newfie but it's the wrong color. What is it, what is it?" and then of course when they took it out for judging it was indeed a newf

Very balanced b/w pattern, like a good paint horse.

Three thumbs up.

Pat, who could care less what breed judges are looking for

Deerhounds don't have AS short a lifespan as wolfhounds. Ours lived til 13 1/2, 10 or 12 is good, where as with the wolfhound, 7 or 8 is more expected.

A breeder should not place dogs with that severe a defect, that's unethical. They should sull up and do the right thing - put the animal down on their own property as soon as it is diagnosed. Instead of on antibiotics forever and dying of a heart attack or in a hot climate. That is so horrible I don't want to continue or I am going to say some really not-for-the-ears-of-stevedores-let-alone-children type things.

The original color of the Newfoundland dog was the 'Landseer' pattern - black and white.

The black and white is popular now. It makes far, far more sense for a dog that works on water than all black. You can see the Landseer dog in the water far better, especially in bad conditions.

Im so happy to hear that a Deerhound won. I wish my mom was still alive to have seen it. My mom and I were lucky enough to own years back. Her name was Tara. We lost Tara the day before she turend 12. She developed Lymphoma and we had to euthanize her.
She was the very best dog we ever had. I miss her so much. She was truely an amazing dog.
I completely agree with Welsummerchicks observations and comments. This is a breed of very tight knit breeders and they are very very serious about breeding and keeping the breed true and not letting it get all screwed up like so many others are now a days. I remeber watching a Westminster show one year and one of the anouncers was saying that the Deerhound was the perfect family dog, great with kids, and had wonderful temperments. He also stated that the size of the breed saved it from getting ruined by becomming popular.
