Hi,
I am new to quail (I had some bobwhites hatch a few weeks ago and had issues with them but the red bulb fixed that).

Now I have about 60 coturnix that hatched over the weekend. So far I have lost 10 of them, all of which seemed healthy from the start. No picking, no blood or anything.
I added Nutridrench to their water. I have their starter crumbles spread out on the bottom of their brooder as well as some second crop hay sprinkled down to keep them "busy".

Now I have one that is getting weak and has a wet/poopy bottom. Here is a picture.

Any suggestions for that as well as the random deaths? It's been 1-4 deaths each day since they hatched on Saturday.

Thanks

Looks like unabsorbed egg sac or infected navel. This could have stemmed from high incubation temps, high humidity at hatching or possibly bacteria in the incubator.

Incubators need to be thoroughly clean and fumigated after each batch of eggs. Bacteria love wet warm environments.

You can keep the heat up a bit higher in the brooder. Week old Cots normally start at 95 degrees. However since these birds are a tad ill, up your heat to 97 degrees and don't lower it at the end of the first week. Leave it at 97 for a few extra days.

You can also add vitamins to the water to boost the immune system in hopes they heal themselves. Also, crush up the feed well so they can eat it. These quail are tiny and can not yet eat the standard crumble. Sprinkle it all around on the floor around the feeders. Keep paper towels down while doing this for a few days, to make sure everybody is eating.

There are a few things you might do to help these babies out and here is a link to this issue...

Thank you!
I actually moved the heat lamp a bit higher because I felt it was too warm for them. Though they have a large area where there is no heat in case they get too hot.

I have paper towels down and sprinkle the crumble everywhere. It is always cleaned up (I put more down 3-4 times a day) except for the really large pieces of course.

I just don't know what else to do. I just lost 2 more :( and I have Nutridrench in their water as I thought they might need the extra vitamins and electrolytes.
