What’s my mutt??

He's very cute! There's no telling, really, except that you saw his mother, and have a very iffy description of a possible father. See how he grows, and his behavior will give clues too.
Does he watch flying objects and birds? Is his nose to the ground like a scent hound? Will he try to herd other critters and children? Guarding/ barking behaviors?
All fun to decipher, and then there's the DNA test if you want to spend for it later.

;) Whatever he is, I can guarantee you he isn't any part Beauceron, Appenzeller Sennenhund or Entlebucher Mountain Dog. Those are all really rare breeds - in fact, even that picture isn't of a Beuce! That's a Rottie. This is what a Beauceron looks like;

Very different head shape.
I've worked with dogs professionally in several states and even so, can count the individuals of those breeds I've met on one hand with fingers left over.

You guys are going off color, and he is an incredibly common color for an Aussie or Aussie mix. You'd have to look at other traits, most of which won't be apparent until he's grown. And even then, you can't overlook the possibility that his father comes from a long line of dogs who's mothers never married.

About his age, the first pic looks like a 6-7 week old pup to me. A veterinarian can age a pup that young very accurately by their teeth, and if you haven't had him to the vet yet for his shots, you can ask when you go.

Regardless of breed - and unless you need a working dog of specific traits, and buy one from working lines, breed matters rather little, overall - what you have is an adorable pup!! Who I'm sure will grow into a handsome and lovable dog.

He likes to stalk my other dog and pounce on him. He doesn’t like to be alone but I think it’s because we’re with him all the time. He barks when he plays and is very vocal but not howly just....ahhhhhahhhh like he’s just making noise. He barks at things he’s scared of and at dogs on the TV. He’s very friendly and loves strangers...(like literally tries to follow them around in the store). No signs of herding behavior since all he does around kids is flop on his butt and let them love him. We’re going to take him down to re-meet the farm since last time he was so scared. He’s not very heat tolerant which is bad since it’s spring in north Georgia. He likes to crawl under chairs, tables and under my bed. He flops out like Superman but I think that’s just because of the heat thing. He’s very intelligent and already understands his name ‘where are you going?” “What’re you doing?” “No” “wanna go outside?” All without actual training. He picks up on things very quickly. His potty training has gone very well with very few accidents. It’s still not fun getting up every four hours lol.

It isn't a Beauceron? Google lied to me!

Stalking behavior can be from aussies, as are natural bob tails. (I’m doubting the owner paid to have tails docked if the dog is a mix and they’re willing to get rid of them so young)

Traits may appear with age. That muzzle might not appear so blunt anymore, those ears might stand, that black might recede. Currently he looks like he might have a stocky breed such as rottie in his background, but it could be another shepherd or shepherd mix got with mom or mom’s genes are masking the father’s and you’ll never be able to guess. I’ve seen some crosses that looked like pure breds or close enough that you couldn’t ever guess what the other parent was

Is where I got the photo are you sure it's not a beauceron? By the way don't Australian shepherds that are black and Brown also have white on them?

Not always. Aussies have an incredible variety of colors and I’ve seen pedigreed individuals with little to no white. So all black, black and tan, merle, red, red and tan, merle, etc. This pup also does have white on the toes and chest and I think on the chin

He has what we call a gentleman’s goatee. It’s not really white, more of a silvery color. He used to have the tiniest tip of white on his tail but it disappeared with age.

Ah ok, thanks! It was hard to tell and looks like it’s something that could fade with age.

Also, for anyone wondering about Aussie colors, check out here! I thought I’d add a source about Aussies with minimal to no white. Plus, look at all of the pretty dogs! 😁
