What’s the obsession over egg shell color?

I under price my eggs and still have people try to give me $5 for a dozen just because they know the eggs are worth more than the $2 I charge for them. That $2 a dozen at best covers their feed costs and nothing more.

I also charge $2 a dozen. I have 11 chickens and get 15 to 20 dozen a month. That's 30 to 40 dollars... which is about twice what I pay for feed. But I don't think I'll ever pay off the cost of their coop.

I am very new to chickens ( got my first flock 2020) and started with red sexlinks and I was so excited when a hen I raised as a chick started laying green eggs! I don’t know about obsession but for me and my kids it’s fun gathering an array of different coloured eggs. It’s also fun to see which hen is laying which egg. I’m looking forward to see what colour my up and comers are going to lay. I love the variety regardless of them all tasking the same.
ps my kids love it when they can have a breakfast of “green eggs and ham”

I love an assortment of eggs. We only have three chickens, but the egg basket is already so mixed and beautiful. One of ours lays every day, nonstop, a nice small brown egg. Another lays enormous brown eggs with white spotting and our third little Easter Egger lays fairly large seafoam eggs with white spotting. Of course they vary, and the spotting is always different!

I have the same reaction when eating store eggs, but I have no clue why? I never have the same issues with eggs from my backyard hens. Do you happen to know why? I thought possibly I am having a reaction the antibiotics? or possible injections the store hens receive?

It could even be something in their washing processes that is causing the issues. The pores of the eggs open so it's not entirely out of the realm of possibility that some of the solutions they're using leach in during the process.

oh and my starlight green egger is the most reliable layer so far. She started on Thanksgiving and hasn’t missed a day yet. My others have rest days.
