hello again chicken lovers.

i have had my lovely bertha for quite a bit now. she is around 6-8 months old. ever since i first got her, she had this eye thing. i have done EVERYTHING i can. (well, almost anything) saline, vetrx, warm compress, etc. she used to have a pus ball in her eye, and then i started using the vetrx. that got rid of the pus but i put it in her eye, nose, underwing, and mouth. it can back a few days ago, but then it fell out again or it just disappeared. the pus disappeared within a day. now her eye is just cloudy and black. she is still a very happy hen, but she doesn’t lay. what can i do?

thank you!

Poor Bertha! Have you tried Vertricyn Eye Wash or Gel? If her eye was poked or cut on a branch or leaf or something, this might clear it up. We had a nasty bout of Fowl Pox, but it was accompanied by facial lesions (and one case of Wet Fowl Pox that involved an eye full of pus/swelling), which Bertha doesn't seem to have. The second photo looks very much improved. Maybe she just doesn't feel like herself and will lay soon. Does she have any other symptoms?

You might be looking at a fungal infection among other causes. Marek's can affect the eye in this manner, as can fowl pox, and even eye injuries. If she's been exposed to unsanitary conditions where a lot of ammonia gas was allowed to form in the air, that could also cause this eye problem.

Can she see out of that eye? Have you tested her to see if she reacts to movement on that side?

A very safe an effective (and cheap) treatment for ocular fungal infections is coconut oil, the virgin variety, not hydrogenated. Just warm to body temperature and place a drop or two by eye dropper in the affected eye. If it clears up, you'll know it was fungal.

Anyway, it's a place to start.

she does not have any other symptoms. no weird breathing, nothing.

thanks! i have coconut oil, but have never tried it. and yes, at one point in her life she was in a barn that didn’t have much light and not much ventilation. it was also very dusty. thanks again!
