I was just coming Back from mowing the lawns when I looked Over at my hens and I saw that my wyandotte had a funny looking eye. I picked her up and inspected it more closely and saw that there was a swelling near the eye and some bubbles around it, here is a picture. I don’t know what it is that happened her. I am quite worried about it so anyone who knows what it is and how to cure it please reply 🙏

I’m more of a “Duck Person”, but swelling and bubbles in the eye might be a good indicator that she has a respiratory infection, to be more specific Mycoplasma Gallisepticum (MG) which is incurable and the bird will remain a carrier for life, however, the symptoms can be alleviated with the use of antibiotics such as Tylan 50.

Is she showing any other respiratory-related signs like sneezing, tail bobbing, rattled breathing, etc?

It’s best to know what you’re dealing with here, so it may be a good idea to take some tracheal swabs and have it sent in for testing.

She is not my best bird just laying hen I have other good show birds should I get rid of her in case she affects and infect the rest of my birds ?

She probably has MG. If she has been with your flock, they have probably been exposed already by her or from the same source that carried it to her. MG symptoms can show up within 6-10 days of exposure, but it also makes chickens carriers for life once they have been exposed. I would get some testing through your local NPIP, your state vet, or the Zoologix lab above. The state or local option may be less expensive. Close your flock to birds or birds going out of the flock. MG symptoms can be treated with certain antibiotics (Tylosin, oxytetracycline, doxycycline, enrofloxacin, Denagard,) but the disease is never cured. It may come back during periods of stress, cold weather, molting, etc. Here is a link for your state lab:

If my show hens have it will that rule them out of being contenders for any poultry shows in the future or is it just an inconvenience? And will it kill them
