What a difference 2 1/2 weeks makes!

We now have Chickenzillas!

I can't believe how fast they grow .. we've had to put a top on their brooder, they can all fly very well now and it's very easy for them to escape!


You can see they are losing their baby chick fluff and their new feathers are coming in rapidly! They now have tail feathers, and their wings are almost fully feathered out . their legs are starting to turn much more green now too! They are in the midst of the 'uglies' right now .. they look kind of moth eaten.

We ended up losing one on Easter morning, it was very sad for the girls and I. Thankfully the surving three are doing great though and we've had no more problems.

What kind of chicks do you have? ONe of them looks like mine do !
And yes!! Mine grew soo much faster then we 'planned' !!!

Had to get hubby to whip me up a temp pen to keep them in till they could graduate to the coop!! Now I cant wait for the eggs and more baby chicks to arrive!! So much to look forward to !!!

LOL, if you think they're going through a "special" stage now, just wait another week and a half!! The four week old birds look VERY special.

Mmtillman .. our chicks are Easter Eggers. I'm glad your chicks are doing well. We need to get hopping on our coop and run here pretty soon, too.

SpringChickens .. I figured they'd get even more moth eaten looking as their necks and heads start to fill in.

Theres nothing better than a giant cardboard brooder for those super fast growing boogars.

I have a batch in one right now. Soon i will put them in the coop and be done with the brooder mess.

Oh for goodness sakes!! The EEs seem to feather much faster than the Brahmas. I got my first 3 chicks ever 2 weeks ago (Brahmas) and they are just starting to get lots of wing feather, while the 3 day old EEs I got yesterday are about a third of the Brahma's size, yet they already have almost full wings! Is that normal for different breeds?

I have 2 EE's too. We went camping for 3 days and I swear they doubled in size while we were gone. I don't think my RIR's grew that fast. I think one of my EE's may be a rooster. He/she/it has a longer tail than the other and carries it more up right. Could it just be the a difference in breeds used for the cross?
