What about an egg swap????

"i think a better idea would be a reverse of the first one i said. first person says for example i'll say mine.
silkiechick can't take standards, no mutts please. then someone who has bantams and pures could post their name and what they can't have or don't want next and so on. the person under me is who would send to me and what we get is a surprise. that way everyone sends to the person above them and u now what not to send. if u can't send but smething they don't want then wait to chime in till someone posts u can fill their request. due a cut off date and a ship date. if ya don't send ya can't do any other swaps and have a tread for recieved so the hostess knows who has or hasn't keep up their end of the swapping. do one swap a mth same way." ......ok let me see if i can do that so it makes sence....

this is an example-say there is 4 people who join(of course there will be more so i'm shorting this cause i got to run out in a hail storm in a few min to go to town)

i post -silkiechick-no standards and pures only

say kerri has pure cochin bantams, she'd post under me
kerri- anything

next person posts they say no bantams

next person has black giants so they post their name and what they don't want going by the 4 catigories listed by repo also.

everyone sends to the person who posts before them only. if someone doesn't want bantams and that's all i have then i won't post after them i wait till i have something that fits someone who posts. noone says what they are sending it's a surprise. but at the beginning ya all agree 6 eggs, 12 eggs whatever so that is the min everyone sends if your swapper has extras they wish to send it's totally up to the sender but not necisary. dates sound good.

and so on down the list....

Silkiechick, that sound very good!! The only thing I am wondering about is if the last person says no bantums and that is all you have being the first person, then what? Jenn

Good question Jenn! But other than that I LOVE IT!!! That's PERFECT!!! I think that's the best whole plan ever!!!!
Since the dates are agreed upon by all we just need to hear from NIfty and if it's ok than we'll begin! I ma all excited again

Now if my DH can just fix our washer so I don't have to sell all my chickens (yeah right like that will ever happen

I think a good set of categories would be:
Anything (mutts included)
Waterfowl*
Large Fowl Chicken*
Bantam Chicken*
Assorted*

*pure breeds only

See!!

Here you are, getting me all excited.

When my girls pick up... or start laying at all (my ducks have taken the winter off) I would be all for a mystery box of eggs. Base requirement that if you are sending different species of birds that you need to send a minimum of 4 eggs so as to not have any lone hatches. If there are species you don't raise, put an ad up at a local feed store and line a home up for the breeds you don't raise. That would be a great way to meet more local poultry lovers in your area. (Don't be surprized when someone from BYC answers your ad, lol.)

It could be a legitimate who wants to trade my box of mystery eggs for yours... Do you know what is fun about hatching mystery eggs? You have no idea what is coming out. I remember the first time I had a nn cross hatch with its little buzz cut fuzz on its head.

I like the idea of once a month having a chance to send mystery eggs to someone else.. We can call it EGGS ACROSSED AMERICA, lol.

if that happens make a post u can't fill the last person see if someone is willing to fill it a second time(extra time) and they would add in between so they would get 2 times and send 2 times to loop them instead of one time. if at the end ya needed an extra for bantam or purebreed i don't mind being the filler person i'm sure there is a few others that would not mind also for the othe catagories so we can make sure we get everyone.

as long as there is a set # of min eggs to send, and say like there has to be a set # of people in between when ya sign up again that way everyone doesn't try to snag all good ones so noone else gets them i think it will work. what do u guys think??

Things seem like they are moving right along.
Glad you're excited again Karri, I felt bad when you last posted, felt kinda like I hurt your feelings. This is such a great idea and you had it, I don't want you to feel bad.

I am man enough to realize that women make better bosses. (We are out numbered here guys, our only hope is to kiss butt). So, I don't want to be incharge but I will help in any way I can. If we need a set of eggs to get things rolling I got ya covered.

SilkiChic, that would work well. I like it.

Did you make it through the hail storm? Hope so.

JK, If I understand it right, and I'm not sure I do. If the poster said no bantams and thats all you had you would just have to wait till someone else took up the offer and said I have Mutts, then you would say, if you wanted mutts. I'll take those mutts and I have Bantams. The more specific your desires the longer you may have to wait, but at some point, fairly regularly i hope, everything should come up. The key to making this work is numbers of people. We are on the most active chicken board, and seem to have a core of very good people. This should work well.

Graceful, Sounds good to me. Just to clarify when we say anything are we including waterfowl or is that a totally seperate group. The reason I ask is I honestly wouldn't know what to do with a duck, and I think some people may want only chickens included in anything. We could do a mystery catigory which could be whatever you want to send. Turkeys, Ducks, Geese, small elephants. As long as people a clear as to what the have "I have an assotment. Maybe chickens, ducks, or turkey" then the next person would decide if thats what he wants and post "I'll take your assorment and I have Rhode Island Reds" and on it goes. Or if we do it like Karri first suggested, and I think that may be best to start, you could just say what you have and what you want and the committee would match you up. You could in theory ask for only Rose Comb Rock Island Reds and say thats all you are interested in. If no one offers RCRIR you would be given an opportunity to expand your desires or not get anything that month. Obviously, that would mean that the person that says I want chicken eggs will get more action than a more specific request. I think that will be the backbone of this project, a lot of people will have a blast just getting different kinds of chickens. I hope I'm not getting confused with all these different methods. Sorry if I am.

Leslie, Glad you are excited. Its contagious.
I too think the Mystery Egg deal is going to be very popular. I'd really like to push for 6 eggs. I'm not sure how good my incubation skills are yet. And this, I think, should be geared for the new people and to bring more people to the board. Not to shut out the more experienced breeders here who I hope will participate too, but I don't think a guy (male or female) with a coop full of prized whatever birds is gonna want a mystery box of eggs. If so great, but I don't think that will be the norm. If a new chicken owner is surfing and comes across BYC like I did and sees he can get an assortment of eggs for trade he's gonna be alot more likely to register here. Niffty gets a bigger post count, we get different eggs. A win/win, at least from my limited perspective.

Silkie, you understand this better than I do.

Hey guys, things sound real good but I would truely suggest not going into anything other then chickens. There are so many people with so different amounts of experience that someone might end up with a big mess. I have hatched everything but peachicks and they all have different temps, humidities and incubation days. If someone wants to swap other poultry or waterfowl I think it should be done on a different swap, maybe one on one. JMO. Maybe if this gets going and the bugs get worked out it could be incorperated in the future. Also if you are in it for fun please be flexible. I know some people are going to want certain breeds and for that you might want to also do a one on one swap with another member. The idea of these types of swaps are to have the fun and suprise of what hatches not hoping to get some super expensive eggs from someone. I would suggest 6 to 12 eggs to give the best shipping chances. Monthly is a nice idea, that way people in the south can get started and those of us in the north will be able to join in soon as our chickens thaw out..lol Also remember that if you have your birds together now and plan on separating per breed that you will want to give them 3 to 4 weeks to have pure eggs. Just some more ideas. Jenn

Thanks Jenn, you make some very good points. I totally agree about each different kind of fowl requiring different things not only during hatching but during their lives. People would have to be clear anbout what they are sending, and if its a Mystery Package then we would have to split that up somehow. The more I think of it though I don't think it will really be to much of a problem.
You are so right, this is for fun not for building a Grand National Trophey flock, although we do have the resources on this board to do it.

Thanks Chickenfeed.
