What about herbs? what are dangerous, what are benificial?

I have planted herbs mostly lavender, rosemary and oregano. They tend to attract bugs and the chicks love to pick at them, but I don't know if they are actually eating the buds and flowers. I am hoping it is safe...oh and my girls are only about 5 weeks old. They also go for the hydrangeas too.
Any advise on chicken safe landscaping plants to add to the yard to attract bugs, or feed the girls? I am in california so just about anything goes.

The only herbs my chickens go crazy for is parsley. They won't eat basil, or other strong herbs.

Heavy mulch or boards on the ground will create an environment prime for bugs. The chickens can dig them out of the mulch or from under the boards when you move them.
