Thanks to the folks who share on this thread. First time chicken owners and tonight was the first night our younger chicks went into the hen house with the older chicks on their own. They had been working their way in the last week. Both groups still graze by themselves during the day. At feeding times they rotate groups by the feeders and I make sure to slip everyone plenty of mash at fermented mash time.

Must of checked this thread 100x for direction. For sure I thought I would have injured chicks but everyone seems to do really well at night. The lowest chick's bum feathers got stuck in the automatic door (not pulled out, just kind of secured there) tonight so I opened, kind of gave her a little shove and shut the door. Last night she was roosted on the ramp on the other side of the door from her buddy that was inside so I picked her up and put her inside. Slowly but surely step by step. The youngest chicks are 17 weeks, the older chicks about 22 weeks. The older chicks are on the roosts, the younger are camped out on straw by the door and in one egg box. Hopefully by next week everyone gets in on time.

Previously the younger chicks would wait for me to collect them and put them in their own pen in the shed for the night.

Hang in there. They wont settle until they are ready. My three groups are all in the main coop together, but seperate. If you know what I mean. Some days they are intermixed, others all seperate by their different groups. This takes time. I am down to hoping they are cohesive by next year! At least they dont seem to be hurting each other now.

The younger chicks have grown a bit and now are working their way onto roost spots at night. One of the older hens...the lowest on the former totem pole...is giving them a hard time. The rooster will let them roost in his vicinity at night and is ok most of the time during the day with them. Sometimes they get him going but the little ones do seem to enjoy getting the older hens going at times...
