The older neighbor (more experienced with chickens) said when their legs turn yellow too. Then you are getting close. Hang in there!
I have never heard of the leg color changing before. It must be a myth. There are breeds that have black legs and breeds with green legs (which I have and their legs did not turn yellow). Perhaps that is only true with certain breeds but not all. Combs and wattles getting redder is what I have read that means they are getting ready to lay.
