For the last ten years, my better half and I have run a small, 5-acre suburban farm. We grow mostly flowers, berries, and orchard fruits for market, and veggies and nuts for our own consumption. Year after year, we've dealt with bugs, mostly grasshoppers and slugs, and have tried all sorts of silly solutions (it's so fun to put organza bags on every bud on 2,500 dahlias).

We're on the brink of bringing fowl to our little homestead, both to control pests and to provide a source of eggs and meat. After countless hours of reading here (thank you!) and elsewhere on the web, we've settled on muscovies as probably the best fit to address our pest problems while also providing a source of protein.

My primary worry, however, is that our new roommates will simply devour our blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries, while also flying over the fence to gobble up our lettuce and strawberries. We can accept some collateral damage, but not wholesale destruction.

The optimist in me hopes that with plenty of bugs, excess fruit, and a couple acres of orchard grass, dandelions, and comfrey, as well as a half acre of millet, peas, and beans (or something else?) planted just for them, that our commercial fruits won't be wiped out by our new friends. Is my optimism crazy?

Hiya, and welcome to BYC! :frow

Here is one of the uses of chicken wire...to keep chickens/ducks out of or away from things we don't want them into. We use 1/2" hardware cloth to keep predators out of their coops and pens, but chicken wire is around our garden to keep the chickens out.

I wouldn't bother trying to plant something for them unless you fence it as they'll eat it before it can grow. We tried it with Kale, didn't work, so never planting anything we grow for them outside of the fence again!

We're glad you're here!

Almost anything sounds better than organza-bagging all those dahlias!

Many of my "valued" plants have chicken-wire fences or little cages around them to prevent full-scale destruction by the poultry.
And, although you've already chosen a breed (and a nice one, at that) my goofy runner ducks have NEVER attempted to fly over a fence. They can barely achieve a couple seconds of lift off and nearly no altitude at all.

Welcome to BYC! Best wishes with getting your ducks and continued success for your suburban farm. It sounds great!!

Hi, in the past I had 2 acres for my flock to roam and eat all the bugs, frogs, plants, etc, that their little hearts desired. What their little hearts desired most of all was my garden...they could strip a blueberry bush or raze a kale crop faster than you'd ever believe.

Good luck!
