Racoons are tremendously strong and could do the damage you described.

my husband said that raccoons dont care about the noise that they make
would a raccoon pass up 4 trash bins to get to the back of the yard where the rooster is
i know that we have raccoons and skunks

Opossums eat the heads, and only kill as much as they can eat, which is usually only one or two birds. They also eat it on the spot. Raccoons on the other hand, may kill many before taking one off to eat at another location. Both have fingers, are very sneaky, and very strong. They're also masters at climbing and squeezing into things.

Around here, raccoons are known to kill just for the sake of killing. They will take off the heads and leave. As for passing up the garbage cans, sure if all they want to do is kill.

i guess that i should of mentioned this
the rooster was in a very large pen by himself
this is because a couple of months ago he was attacked by two dogs and his feathers were ripped out of his back
and he was stripped bald
the other rooster in the pen that he was in was pecking at him making him bleed
so the night before i moved him into the solo pen to heal
that was his first night alone in that pen and he was killed

I had a racoon get into my coop two nights ago. Caught it in there at 6am. Lost four birds and have one with a neck wound. None of the dead were torn apart. Including the one it was working on when I got there. I must confess that I didn't look over the dead extensively. All the heads were there though and none looked like it was being chewed off. I'm not sure some didn't die in the panic. One was warm, not the one it was working on.
It got in because I hadn't closed up the soffit near the top of the roof. It is now, with 1/2" hardware cloth and 2x4's With about a 1' space for ventilation that space has hardware cloth it's hard to explain. I don't expect a coon can chew throught that. I also intend to cover that with screening for skeeters.
I know it's hard to admit but maybe posters could explain how their predators are getting into there coops, so stupid people like me can avoid the same mistake.
