I was informed after picking 12 chicks and ending up 5 hens that if they were all hatched on or about the same day, the larger healthier looking ones are usually male. So that is the last time I use that method. This year I'll pick the scrawny tiny shy ones.

My dark brahma roo was the scrawniest, unfeathered, ugly little thing for the longest time. He now outweighs my hens by about 7 lbs.

Just to illustrate the point:

He certainly is a handsome bird!
But the odds have to be in favor of smaller being female.
The words look hollow but it's all I have past magic.

I sure hope so! ALL 8 of my chicks are play fighting and charging each other. I hoped a FEW of them to be hens :(
I have one Silkie, one Americauna, one ?, one bandy, two leghorns, two Golden Buffs

I have 18 chicks that are 10 and 13 days old. Today I was video taping them playing when my cat walked by. Two of them stood straight up in a guarding rooster stance while the rest ran away. I was pretty surprised to see that at such a young age.
