Here in South Florida it's warm enough to sit outside around a big fire burning in the backyard fire pit on New Year's Eve. We can roast hot dogs & make s'mores over the fire, and sit back to watch all the fireworks the neighbors are sending up into the sky. We talk about the triumphs & trials of the past year, and our hopes & plans for the new one.
A few years ago we had a real surprise, at about 10pm an elderly man drove along the canal bank behind our house and turned into our back yard through the space where that year's hurricanes had knocked down the fence. He drove in a big circle around the yard & got his front tire stick on a chunk of log set by the chicken coops. That log saved his life, because he had no idea of where he was, and didn't even realize that he had been driving alongside a canal! I believe that if he hadn't gotten his car stuck in our yard he would have driven straight out and into the canal. We later learned that he had left his house over 30 miles away that afternoon just to go to the post office & had gotten himself terribly lost.
Since then our New Year's Eves have been much less dramatic, but we're always expecting something interesting that could potentially happen...
I pray especially for all those preparing to face a New Year for the first time without a loved one alive to share it, and also for those for whom this holiday brings sorrowful memories. May God provide the comfort & healing you need.
