What Are Good Treats For Baby Chicks?

I actually didn't give my silkies from cackle hatchery grit. Just starter feed and they all lived. Well except three but two because they got sick from the ride from cackle to the postal office and one died of cold weather.

I go out and get a handful of dirt and give that to them. I figured that's the dirt they'll be eating when they get older, they might as well get used to it. The chicks I have now are 4 weeks old and it's been snowing so I haven't given them any grit yet,but once it dries out I'll get them some.

I just scooped up a handful of leaves from the backyard. They are having a blast scratching through them and picking them up and throwing them. They are almost 2 weeks old now and have not touched any of the treats I have tried like hard boiled egg and grapes. I am sure there are probably small bugs or something in the leaves. I am using sand in the brooding box so they eat a bit from time to time. I think it is probably as good as the grit you would buy.

My chicks range in age from 2 - 4 weeks old. I purchased chick grit for them at the feed store. They thought it was a big treat! Couple days later, I fed them half of a boiled egg. They didn't know what to make of it at first. It took them a while to eat it. Now when I put a chopped up egg in their pen, they attack it like a bunch of raptors! It's hilarious!

Today I fed them some chopped up grapes and bananas. They jumped on it until they found out it wasn't boiled egg, then they backed off. I left if for them, and an hour later it was all gone. Just takes them a while to get used to something new.

I do give them dirt to scratch in, eat, dust bathe in every 4-5 days or so. I want them to get used to whats in our soil so it won't be such a shock when they get tossed out to the coop floor.
