Rock on, my friend.I have... Eclectic taste in music. Favorites change depending on my mood, and what I'm doing/working on. I still do listen to new artists, and I'm constantly adding to my "favorites" playlists as I find stuff I like. I could write a book on my journey with music, but I'll just summarize with some general categories and specific artists.
In the interest of keeping this to under 200k words, Here's an unsorted list of categories and 5 bands from each you should check out. If yo'ure familiar with these generes you will probably see some big names I'm leaving out. I'm choosing based on my idea of how to introduce a genre to someone who hasn't ever heard it, and sometimes that means you go simpler/easier to digest. So my list is "noob" oriented.
1. Metal:
Metallica/Tool/Megadeth/Slayer/Lamb of God/System of a Down/Rage Against the Machine (ok fine, 7, but there's 50 I could rip through here and not even blink.)
2. Industrial:
Nine Inch Nails/Gravity Kills/KMFDM/Ministry/Rammstein/Stabbing Westward
Again, there's a lot of depth here if you're into the genre.
3. Electronic/EDM
There's TONS of subgenre's here I'm not even going to get into dating all the way back to Kraftwerk. Here's a sampling.
VNV Nation/The Crystal Method/The Prodigy/Infected Mushroom/Bassnectar
4. Alternative. From when it was cool.
Depeche Mode/The Cure/Smashing Pumpkins/Puscifer/A Perfect Circle
5. Seattle Grunge
they changed music overnight in 1991 so they get their own category, and the list won't surprise you
Nirvana/Pearl Jam/Soundgarden/Alice in Chains.
6. Electroswing.
Something I've gotten into over recent years due to the solid beat and catchy hooks.
Caravan Palace/Parov Stellar/Electric Swing Circus/aronchupa (sorta, more general EDM)/Tape five
7. Prog rock
This is mostly old bands. Sue me. They still kick butt. A lot of depth here too.
Primus/Dream Theater/Rush/Queensryche/King's X
8. Classical.
Straight up these are my top 5 classical composers and we can fight about it if you want to be wrong.
Holst/Vivaldi/Smetna/Bach/Beethoven.
9. "Folk". I apply that term loosely here. Think deep mystical.
Heilung/Warduna/The Hu/Aurora/Skald
10. "Other". Some stuff just doesn't fit in my categories.
Gioli and Asa (dance)/Andrey Vinogradov (folk, Hurdy-Gurdy player)/Eminem (hip hop)/Peter Gundry (neoclassical, dark music)
A lot to unpack here. If you're interested in suggestions for any of these genres or artists, let me know and I cam give some ideas. This is the tip of the iceberg really.
Les is one of my Personal music gods.Rock on, my friend.
I want to be a fisherman.
Totally agree! I don't understand some music nowadays. I love listening to 80's and 90's rockI'm going to sound really old here.
While there are some modern artists that are quite talented, for the most part it doesn't compare to the era prior to the advent of auto tune and this time when the most promoted songs were written by the same 3 individuals for today's top acts.
The creativity and musicianship of the period from the mid-60s to the mid-80s is far superior. Drum machines and computers aren't music.
Check out some possible rabbit holes to go down:
Beatles, Queen, Grand Funk Railroad, Janis Joplin, Rory Gallagher, Bob Marley, Santana, Jimi Hendrix and so many more. Any of them are a treat to listen to live. Most modern 'pop' acts can't compare when performing live.
As I said, there are exceptions like acapella sensation Pentatonix and rocker Jasmine Star.
To be entirely honest, there is lots of good new music, but it isn't the pop music that is constantly aired on the radio.
A somewhat similar thread.
