What are the best feeders that you use? PLEASE post pics!!!!

built the feeder out of plywood. use a homemade auto-watering bucket during summer then use a the galvanized waterer from the farm supply store during the winter.

You can use a bucket in a different manner with either a rubber feed tub or a metal pan which is a bit larger in diameter than the diameter of the bottom of the bucket. Drill a few holes along the bottom. The more feed you want dispensed the more (or larger) holes you'd want to drill. Then bolt the pan to the bottom of the bucket. A lid will keep the feed clean & prevent birds from pooping in it.

If you want to make a waterer, drill the holes at the top of the bucket (with a lid) and just invert the bucket into the tub as opposed to attaching it. Make the holes the height you want the water dispensed to.

Sorry if these instructions aren't too clear - it's late and I'm sick!

Yeah our feeders made out of PVC didnt dispense feed fast enough. We tried tilting the feed tube where the peck out of at an angle so food would flow down. Our chickens don't free-range so they don't get much other feed like grass and leaves. They just have a large dog kennel they can go out in. They love the fresh grass I pick for them. It is gone in .012 seconds!

Here's the feeder that I made for my kids. Uber simple and works very very well.

Take 5 gal bucket w/lid and 22" or 24" platter that goes under plant pot.
Sit bucket in platter and mark height of platter edge on side of bucket.
(Or you could just measure, I like using Kentucky windage, grin)
Then I bored 4 holes, across from each other, in the bottom of the bucket making sure to NOT go above the marks I made for the platter. I believe that I used a 2" hole bit. (The kind used for putting in doorknob sets.)

Then I bolted the bucket to the platter by drilling 4 holes through them both and using bolts, large flat washers and nuts.

At this point, you can simply fill the bucket and it will fill the platter. If you bend the handle so it comes to a peak in the middle ... you can hang it like I did at the birds head height so they dont scratch the food out.

I also had an old plywood scrap that I cut a hole in and just let it hang above the handle so the birds dont perch on it. (See pic, I don't explain things very well. grin)

Hope this helps! It really works well for my kids ...

Peace!

OH OH! Although it feeds them perfectly, I am thinking about adding an upside down cone/funnel inside at the bottom. Just to help the dispersal when the food level gets low. *shrug*

PS: Ignore the duct tape please. I used the lid from my old upside down tomato planter.

I just realized that my previous post is probably what was being described here. And I use that waterer too ... LOL It works REALLY well.

20 pound dog feeder, $25 Tractor supply. Works great and you can get larger for more. I have 6 chickens and its fine, they dont all eat at the same time. Its actually pretty large base, I have it about 8" up off the floor and have very minimal spillage.

I just happened to have a empty container and it looked like a feeder to me. Its not easy to cut out the top and bottom but I did it with a metal jig saw blade. When you get the top off a plastic lid from a cool whip container fits just right and snug. I needed to put it up higher off the floor on a bigger platform..but it works great and holds a lot of corn. CJ
