So I am first going to say I have no need to take my animal to the vet. They are all perfectly healthy and have no reason to be taken. I was just going to ask this question wondering what you guys thought about it. At what point should a duck be taken to the vet? I have heard many thoughts on this through the years on many different threads which deal with a real crisis. I just have heard stories where vets didn't know what was going on...which can happen with any animal as vets can't speak to the animal. Vets really do a great job for having to read the animals symptoms. :) I love our vet! :love I was just wondering what were yalls views. I mean some of yall might say home treatment is the best thing unless an extreme emergency and others will prob say that a vet in any case is a must. I was thinking on this and thought about what yalls view were. I am not going to share my view just wanting to know yalls. I also hope this helps for people who maybe are in an emergency and don't know what to do. Thanks in advance!

i had a really excellent experience taking my Rouen in a year or so ago when she had reproductive issues. I took her to a veterinarian that sees all kinds of exotics, and she was very kind and knowledgeable. I would not bring my ducks to my cats’ veterinarians (who kick ass) as they don’t have the same kind of experience with birds. I do think it’s difficult for many as there are so few veterinarians that see ducks. I am surrounded by dozens of small animal vets, a handful of large animal vets, but there’s just the one that sees ducks. It does worry me to see the indiscriminate use of antibiotics by people who do not know what is wrong with their duck, so they decide to cover all the bases. However, that being said, I understand that financial issues and lack of knowledgeable duck vets play a role in this. At any rate, my belief that a veterinarian should always be consulted first about ducky health issues if possible, if you do not have the knowledge and experience to home-treat whatever issues are present.

We have an exotic animal hospital 5 min away who has a bird specialist in residence. She has been excellent and sweet as can be. We are fortunate, as we've needed her for angel wing (i was not confident wrapping on my own) and treatment after a hawk attack. Our philosophy is, if there is someone available who is an expert, they get to handle it.

That’s awesome that you had a good experience! I think you are very right when you say there are not many vets who see ducks. I can think of maybe...maybe one vet that would see ducks where I live and we live in a smaller town so I don’t know how literate they would be with duck med...I really don’t think they see a lot of ducks. Thanks a lot for your insight!❤️
