I bought two heritage Araucana chicks from a reputable breeder the other day, they are 8 wks old. The lady said she reckons one is a pullet but the other she wasn’t sure. I named the pullet Chilli and the iffy Ashley. Does anyone have any idea?

Thanks so much to anyone who replies!

I have had pea combs pink with activity in pullets before, so that isn't convincing.

Ash has a bit more comb development, so watch and wait.

Chilli seems to be very pullet like.

Query...for heritage Auraucana, they both seem to have tails. That can happen in a line. I presume the breeder was culling them for that purpose?

The pea combs look like they may have 3 rows of "peas", but can't tell very well with these pics. Usually a pea comb with 3 rows, often indicates male. Other than that, a few more weeks will give the final answer with more growth.

The Aussies typically have tails.

The Aussie standard is different. I have seen hens with one big row and a small row on each side of that, almost nothing.

They both look like pullets to me. My American Araucana boys tended to have very wide combs, before they showed color. For example, my gold duckwing cockerel at 3 weeks. Vs his salmon sister at the same age.
